Yes, suppressor is a more accurate term but all the patents going back to the early 1900s and all the regulations in the US call it a silencer. Does it really matter? no. Silencer or suppressor everyone will know what you're talking about and anything else is pointless semantics.
His quick math about decibels is complete bullshit. There's so much that goes into it his calculations are straight made up. Without knowing the Caliber of the round, the barrel length of the gun, the brand of ammo, and the exact model of silencer there's no way to know the exact decibels or even guess. And don't even bring up the argument about decibels vs sound wave.
There are plenty of legitimate reason for hunters to use silencers. Maybe you're just being extra protective of your hearing as ear protection can't completely block the sound or you just already have hearing damage. Maybe you're just being considerate to other hunters or hikers in the area who might not have hearing protection on when you shoot.
