Not sure if this has been mentioned since but in WI you can only lose all rights to a child if there is abuse/violence in the home. Pat had to really fight to give up his only child.In my very limited experience, in a completely different state, I have seen it where the court mandated that the three parties come to an agreement that does not suspend parental rights for one party.
It's a really drastic thing to do legally. The courts want to limit the risk of the child ending up in foster care and they don't want to have the parties fight over this again at a later date if say Patrick regretted his decision.
Again, I am not a lawyer. I volunteer with the homeless and vets so from time to time, I end up in court rooms. It must be different in Wisconsin or whatever.
