If there is a better thread to discuss this, please point me to it.

It seems that last night, various art sites and discord servers are exploding with the news that Patreon and Gumroad are being forced by payment processors to censor NSFW content. Supposedly this news is spread via blog post or email, but I've not seen the original posts, only screen grabs and reactions. The tweets sharing the screen grabs are either deleted or blocked or whatever else because I can't save the screengrabs for some reason. I don't want to powerlevel so no Discord screen either.

The gist is that you have to provide proof of consent, including for fictional characters. Certain topic like hypnosis, drugs, alcohol, and "consentual non-consent" are banned outright. Specifically mentioned are photos, video, animation, audio, written works, and AI generated content.

This isn't the first time this has happened. Tumblr was the big casualty of this, and porn hub had a purge of content. Though in those cases you could argue there was real people involved whereas this purge seems to target drawings. Patreon tried to do this in the past but changed course at the last minute. Here's SFOs video from 2018 about it.
This time, people have Subscribe Star and BlueSky to jump ship too.

I've never used GumRoad, but my understanding is that it's used to sell comic books?

While there's a lot of finger pointing, including blaming religious fundamentalists, it seems to most likely reason is pressure from Mastercard, Visa, and/or Paypal. Get rid of what we don't like, or we'll cut off your ability to process payments. Vital for a middleman service. Insert Stonetoss "build your own" comic here.

Payment processors shouldn't be telling others what to do.
The fact this happens pretty regularly with a huge variety of things doesn't get talked about nearly often enough. It's honestly scary how much power payment processors have over businesses and even individuals should they choose to exercise it. I'm not even sure the average population really even understands what kind of hold payment processors have on pretty much most transactions people make that aren't cash. Even outside the internet.

I mean this is obviously another manifestation of what null has been calling out for years. The payment cartel doesn't want to deal with the risks of anything involving guns, porn, politics, or sites like kiwifarms and they can get away with it because of "trade secrets". Are there pressure groups involved? Probably, but they're exploiting a flaw in the system that's been obvious for years. People swinging at the public facing groups are not going to fix the issue with payment processors. Using crypto would at least be a start to side stepping the issue.

They try to justify it by saying certain industries have a high risk of chargebacks but I would be surprised if this was actually true. Furry porn, sure, but firearms? Most firearm sales are to collectors who collect guns like Funko Pops. They have a bunch of disposable income.

Gumroad is bragging how revenue has gone from $550,000 to $900,000, even though this spike is most likely the result of most creators putting their stuff on sale before it's pulled, and people buying things before they're gone.

How come gun guys can make a payment processor but coomers can't?
Because the gun guys have more unity and common ground.

Sure, theoretically some suspiciously wealthy furries could team up and create a coomer payment processor, but there would be loads of infighting. Probably regarding troons, because it's always the fucking troons, or whether to process things wrt really fucked up degenerate porn (beastiality, pedo, that kind of stuff) and it would crumble.

Only thing I could see is coomers uniting under actual porn sites, like how Just For Fans tried to court people leaving Gumroad. Your drawings of boobs for sale probably aren't going to get removed from a site that has chicks in diapers on the front page.

It's also hard to justify in a polite setting.

"I'm making a new payment processor."
"Why."
"Furry porn Reasons."
