I wouldn't have a problem with this if it wasn't so common for others to fake having DID. Or try to say they have "non mental illness" systems.
This would be great for those who have DID! It's like any other app for mental well-being. But no, you know damn well what kind of people are gonna be the ones using this app.

The funniest/worst part is that supposedly people who do have DID aren’t even aware of their alters and only figure it out because they have random periods of memory loss.

So this app is UNUSABLE for people with actual DID. Larpers only pls x

Speaking of minecraft youtubers and system twitter there was a bit of drama in which a minecraft youtuber named Ranboo was going to play a game called Omori and someone on twitter made a huge thread saying the game was ableist because it stigmatized DID and systems (spoiler: it doesn't). This had both Omori and mcyt twitters at each others throat until Ranboo said "never mind I'm not gonna play that"

Ngl it was some hilarious drama

I didnt even know that happened. I was there for the Minecraft YouTube twitter war over Ranboo and a characters altar ego which these people apparently believe means he's somehow got DID.

It seems obvious (at least to me) that you can design an experiment to prove/disprove DID. It's obviously fake in 99.9% of cases but this would demonstrate that. When one "alter" is supposedly "fronting", give them a test that would benefit from the practice effect. Then give them that same test when a different "alter" is "fronting." As the myth goes, there should be a memory gap and the practice effect wouldn't provide a benefit.

Funny- I actually came across a few of these studies the other day. Some older studies did find results that indicated memory loss (it's locked unless you have institutional access, sorry, but that's the citation). However, the authors were taking patients at their word about their memory, and argued for the need for a test method that can't be malingered.

A more recent study had better methods -- it measured response time to items that the "alter" should have no reason to think twice on if the amnesiac barrier is real. Essentially, the subjects hesitated over words from parts of their life they were pretending to have no memory of, compared to random information that actually had no relevance to them. Here's another, more accessible article about that 2012 study: subheading, "Research casts doubt on key aspect of dissociative identity disorder."

TLDR based on this info alone, it's hard to say whether this means DID is fake, or so highly malingered that they couldn't recruit a good sample. But it's not a good look.

I’ve finally finished reading the whole thread, and man, was that a RIDE. I don’t even know what to say besides “what the fuck is wrong with these people.” There’s a lot of teens who somehow have massive followings on Tiktok (I’m talking hundreds of thousands of followers), and yet, the grown ass adults covered here manage to outdo them in terms of insanity. Wild.

Also dissociating and memory loss are symptoms of many mental illnesses Even BPD, PTSD, ADHD, etc, These kids just see dissociation and normal teen identity issues and run with DID/OSDD

These people really manage to make everything about themselves don't they.

"Wait, people are talking about another mental illness? Let's take this time to remind everyone why we're so much more unique, special, and victimized 🥰"

Side note: I would love to see the absolute chaos that would emerge if they tried to turn "mad pride" into a real thing.

Can you imagine this happening 10-12 years ago? All the SuperWhoLock shits on Tumblr would be claiming to be the 10th Doctor or Castiel or Benedict Cumberbatch.

Pretty sure it was happening 10-12 years ago on Tumblr, because that was around the time I first heard about it (plurals, that is) - unless you’re talking about otherkin, which I believe I discovered shortly afterwards.

For what it’s worth, the roots of otherkin go back at least as far as Tolkienfags pretending to be elves in the late 1980s. Although other sources say it’s even older. LGBTA Wiki says it came from the Elf Queen’s Daughters in the 70s, while Nonbinary Wiki says it was Pagan groups in the 60s.

None of these groups however should be confused with the Tumblr version of otherkin (AKA “kinnies” - who, even amongst otherkin subcultures, are considered to be attention-seeking fakes).

Perhaps you’re right in that this particular incarnation didn’t come about until the last few years. When exactly this happened, I cannot say for sure. But I feel it had at least started to exist on 2011 Tumblr. Just my hunch at least.
