EU Poland's top cop injured by exploding present, says ministry - According to some sources it was a grenade launcher

WARSAW, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Poland's most senior police officer was injured and hospitalised when a present he received during a visit to Ukraine exploded at police headquarters in Warsaw, Poland's interior ministry said on Thursday.

Jaroslaw Szymczyk, Commander in Chief of the Polish police, received the gift from one of the heads of the Ukrainian emergency services during a visit to the country on Dec. 11-12.

"As a result of the explosion, the Commander suffered minor injuries and has been in the hospital for observation since yesterday," a ministry statement said, adding the incident took place on Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear what the present was.

The ministry said a civilian employee at police headquarters was also injured but did not need to be hospitalised.

There was no immediate reply from Ukraine's SBU security service to a Reuters request for comment on the incident.

Polish media had earlier reported that an explosion at police headquarters had injured Szymczyk and damaged the ceiling in the building.

"The Polish side asked the Ukrainian side to provide relevant explanations," the ministry said.

According to the German-owned Onet.pl the present was actually a grenade launcher that Szymczyk has pointed and fired without knowing it was loaded. Way to fail the most basic gun safety as the head of police.

I mean...he is Polish.
More relevant is the fact he's a cop, and a high ranking one at that. Typically a group that has very poor weapons handling skills. There's a disturbing amount of American cops who probably would have done the same thing. Nearly every injury that's happened at one of my local ranges has been from dumbass cops.

The back blast from those things going off is enough to kill you, there is a warning on them about not using them indoors for that reason.
Exactly, and a Javelin/NLAW is not a grenade, it's a missile. But I wouldn't expect the head vatnik to differentiate between a grenade launcher and a missile launcher. Even the RPG-7 isn't a "grenade launcher", but a "rocket-propelled grenade launcher", which is something completely else. a "grenade launcher" would be something like a M79.

I would not expect a drunk Pollack journalist to correctly tell the difference between a grenade launcher, an anti-tank missile launcher, or their own flaming dupa. Could've been anything from a PIAT to an RPO-A Shmel which is technically a flamethrower.

I like your retro choice and up you one with a Sawn Off version, there was some legitimately modified by SOG in vietnam and some of there helicopter pilots to give them a hand in LZ clearance - easy to do in the field as well with the aluminium they used for the barrel being easy to cut with basic tools.

One question I do have though is wasn't this parcel screened at all? Even live ammo is a risk if you don't know its in there.

And the progtards think that "only the police should have guns." While at the same time thinking police should be illegal or something.

Fucking LOL

I trump your sawn off version with the China Lake pump action version.

Also there's next to no screening on the Polish/Ukrainian border if you're Polish and working for the government, they cross the border like they go to work every day. Probably was delivered in person.
