Jerry Rice broke the hearts of Black Twitter last year when he came out as an “All Lives Matter” guy in his criticism of Colin Kaepernick’s protest of the national anthem. The legendary 49er later changed his tune and apologized for the tweet while also supporting Kaep for “bringing awareness for injustice.” And now Rice is digging a hole for himself again.

The Hall of Famer is getting all sorts of heat for a Popeyes commercial entitled, “Popeyes Wingovations with Jerry Rice.” In the ludicrous ad, Rice wears the “Taste Mask,” a football helmet with a spinning fried chicken attached for “360 degrees of pure wing rotation for handsfree wing eating.” My goodness.

While there isn’t anything wrong with loving fried chicken, the image of a grinning black man wearing a helmet with a spinning drumstick plays too much on the “black people love chicken” stereotype. Oddly enough, the stereotype has its roots in A Birth Of A Nation, the 1915 silent movie about the founding of the Ku Klux Klan. In one scene, the film depicts black elected officials acting crudely, drinking and boorishly eating fried chicken at a legislative meeting. Since then, the stereotype has been used in racist depictions of black people and remains a sensitive issue.

So, with all that in mind, Jerry Rice is once again feeling the wrath of Black Twitter.

Birth of a Nation?

Yeah, that's where black people liking fried chicken comes from - an unfair depiction in the oldest movie featuring Klansmen. Not the 5,000 Black Fried Chicken and Nìgger Chicken and Sambo's Fried Chicken and Purple Garment Outlets scattered across the South since the dawn of forever. Yeah, the movie did it.

I thought it was just because fried chicken is delicious?

It's the same bullshit from when hip-hop artists in the 80s and 90s indirectly advertised their love for malt liquor and menthol cigarettes in their lyrics. After becoming rich and famous, they went all SJW and sued the breweries and tobacco companies over targeting blacks. Today, many are official spokespersons.

A chain of restaurants that is popular with blacks is using blacks to promote their food. Next they'll be shocked to see Panera using hipsters in their ads, or Tractor Supply Co. using rednecks.
Until I saw that awful ad with two dykes studying and a voice that sounds like somebody talking in a plastic bucket, I never perceived Panera as a hipster joint. After that, seeing the overpriced sammiches, mediocre blended drinks, and a flat soda fountain all made me realize I was incredibly naive. However, it's great when they have the free bread, so I can freeload before going to the liquor store next door.

With all the Paneras around in my area, it's strange how I see more Popeye's ads, when there's only one or two which I'm aware of close by, let alone Carl's Jr./Hardee's where the closest one is like an hour and a half north from me.
