There seemed to be some interest in this guy in the VHEMT thread so I figures, why not, I'll make one for him too.

Pentti Linkola is a Finnish college professor and philosopher who is passionate about saving the environment. Seem normal to you? Well, unlike a lot of big-name environmentalists, who advise people to do things like save power, bike or take the train instead of drive, shop local, and recycle, Linkola thinks the best way to save the planet is to go out and commit yourself some good old fashioned genocide. All in the name of reducing human population and overconsumption, of course. There's one particular genocidaire Linkola seems to be a fan of above others, and that's a certain Mr. Adolf Hitler. Perhaps you've heard of him. Linkola likes Hitler because he concentrated his efforts on "overeating" Europeans and because, according to him, gas chambers are a humane way of "trimming the fat from society."

I'm not exactly sure if Linkola actually believes the stuff he says or if he's just a Neo-Nazi dressing up his genocidal mania in an altruistic cause. I can see arguments for both. There are a number of similar activists in the world who are collectively termed "Ecofascists;" believers in the use of techniques typically associated with far-right dictatorships to solve environmental problems. Things he has said include:

* Once human population reaches critical mass, the world will "rethink" its image of Hitler.
* His ideal society would be a matriarchal one.
* Hitler and Stalin acted "within the realm of ethics."
* Every big city should be hit with a nuke or chemical weapon. Because that's good for the environment.
* the world population should be cut down to 10% of what it is now and soon.
* If given the opportunity to fire a nuke, he'd do so without hesitation.

Recoil in horror from his Wiki biography here.

Meh, he doesn't seem like much of an anything-cow. His views are very extreme, but he seems to have a fairly logical grounding (inasmuch as extremism can be logical compared to, say, Marijan's or Deeker's insanity) and has confined himself to mere intellectual advocacy of extreme measures, knowing that he will never have the opportunity to fire a nuclear weapon. His views aren't truly bizarre, just extreme to the point of being alien to most people. There isn't much to lol or recoil at beyond the initial "wow that guy wants to kill a bunch of people".

On the other hand, ecofascism/environmental extremism in general might make an interesting discussion topic.
