Proper Thread Etiquette

I recently saw a post by Null that I believe was on the happenings thread stating that people sometimes treat threads here like messaging boards and while not directly saying so, implied that they shouldn't be used as such. Being someone who didn't grow up posting on forums I'm not entirely privy to the differences between messaging boards vs. forums in terms of manners. If anyone has a good answer on how to post properly in threads that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure he says people treat threads like chat rooms not message boards.
Chat rooms are like general chat where you talk about whatever while on a forum you ares supposed to just talk about the topic of the thread.
