start thinking nerds.

I pretty much use my ps4 as a glorified blue ray player except to play bloodborne or any other game that hasn't been ported to pc.
when it comes to ps5 with sony porting everything to pc eventually anyways I see no reason to get a ps5 at this point unless I cared about 4k dvd shit, so I'll just stick with my switch, steam deck and pc set up
legit was excited for spiderman 2 but them cutting back on gadgets made me lose interest.

Xbox had a chance to swing things around with the acquisition of so many beloved game companies but managed to shit the bed so there goes any hope of Sony actively trying to do better. There was a (chance) Starfield could have brought some competitive heat but...Bethesda...so, it didn't. There'll be a chance in another 10 years with the release of Elder Scrolls but I'm guessing that'll suck a dick too.

Why make games when:
-You basically control the home console industry
-Your only true competitor is a dying platform who consistently does dumb shit
-Your userbase consists of overzealous retards who will buy anything with the playstation logo attached to it

The console market needs to crash harder than Porsche Girl.

It would be nice if the consoles crashed harder than 1983.

For third parties there's no reason to favour one console over the others. They are all so similar in terms of specs. The Switch is an exception, but usually reducing textures and resolution is enough.

As for first party, Sony has no reason to care. They have (like most big companies) decided that something either makes 80 bazillion dollars in the first week, or it's an obscure failure not worth bothering with. Like Nintendo, they have an install base of fanboys who will buy any slop they put out, so all they do is pander to "current thing" and rake in the awards from game journos in the hope that they'll get enough buyers before word of mouth gets out.

My friend who isn't an early adopter and doesn't like games on his pc because he just uses it to work and doesn't want to have the temptation for distraction just finally got a PS5 for Baldur's Gate. That is the only situation I can see why anyone would buy a PS5 at this point, if you're just anti PC gaming for whatever reason. I never got around to buying a PS5 but totally would have if they hadn't been going for $3000 second-hand when they were released, they blew their chance then when some of us were still optimistic about it and before the economy crashed.

I'm fairly sure the Nintendo Switch owns a large chunk of this market, and not considering Nintendo as "a true competitor" is kinda dumb.

SIE has been considerably scaling down its first-party output to multi-million AAA & GAAS projects, alienating its former home market in Japan, and trying hard to make Playstation become a "luxury brand" (unlike how it originally started). The success of Playstation was primarily built as the de-facto machine for many different third-parties (in the 90's up to the mid-2010's) but also thanks to the various mistakes from its direct competitors in past generations.

I don't believe Playstation will die anytime soon because there will be always people who prefer consoles for the convenience, including playing multiplat third-parties on the PS5. It just doesn't hold the same behemoth presence like in its former days.

Sony always rests on their laurels.
This is the third time they made a great console with loads of games followed up by a piece of shit that doesn't reach its stride until its a year away from being defunct. They don't try to keep the momentum they had going from their prior generation but instead expect it to just carry over.
Remember the PS Vita? I sure do. The PSP had lots of great titles with zero returning for the Vita. Patapon? Dead. God Eater? Went to PS4. MONSTER HUNTER? Nintendo exclusive for the next 7 years. Hell, Konami made a YuGiOh! game for the original PSP as late as 2015, 4 years after the Vita launched.
But hey, they made a new Uncharted game so that'll carry the system :optimistic:

Keyword here is "Home console", Nintendo is more of a competitor in a Red ocean vs Blue ocean sort of way. You could consider Nintendo a "true" competitor but they aren't competing with Playstation in the same way Xbox is.

The Switch is still a home console in addition to be a portable console and can be whatever the end user wants it to be. That's why I'm saying it's likely dominating the same market that Sony/Playstation is trying to compete alongside of Xbox. Hardware firepower has never been a factor of success in the history of consoles anyway, it was always the games themselves.

I can't think of a legitimate reason to pick PS5 over anything else. Everything about it is done better by Xbox, Switch or Steam Boy. The library sucks, and WILL be ported to anything else, and those consoles all have their advantages (switch, which has portability and actual exclusives, the xbox sex|s which benefits from windows support and can use KB/M on a decent selection of games, plus original xbox one games run better with sex which is something that 4->5 bc doesn't do, or Steam/the handheld/Linux which just plain runs PS5 games better than the PS5.) The PS+ is somehow a bigger cash grab than Game Pass, fuck, they couldn't even get the handheld right. The PSP 2 is just a glorified phone app sandwiched between a bisected PS5 controller.

It's less that they rested on their laurels as it is they're fucking quitters. They release the thing, have ONE E3 where they tout an shitty 4v4 CoD game they outsourced to a fly by night shovelware studio(that had to shut down because the game was so bad nobody wanted to work with them) as the big blockbuster and then they fucking abandoned it, turning the thing into a 300 dollar Gamestop/Amazon exclusive PS4 controller that can play an assload of generic animu wankfest dungeon crawlers. Then you look at Nintendo with the 3DS, where it suffered from lackluster sales in it's first year too, only instead of abandoning it they gave the thing a price cut, gave first adopters free games exclusive to them, slashed the price and then doubled down on getting games to the fucking thing.
