With the state of PSX emulation getting somewhere near maturity, I've been playing a bunch of them old low-poly gayms. Unfortunately the PSX/N64 generation of gaming has a reputation for not really holding up. Most things were unrefined and clunky. While every top 10 list will have Symphony of the Night you'll also get games like Siphon Filter which are kinda "why bother?".

So what games does the PSX have that make it a worthwhile console in [CURRENT YEAR?]

I've been playing a bunch of arcadey stuff, like Wipeout, Road Rash and Megaman.

For computer emulation it's still kinda a shitshow.

If you're talking about official hardware emulation you're going to have to wait for the PS5. To bide your time you might want to look into Saturn emulation because that's been making leaps and bounds.

As for what games hold up:
Lunar
Lunar 2
Suikoden 1
Suikoden 2
Azure Dreams
Jade Cocoon
Alundra
Alundra 2
Legend of Mana
Legend of Dragoon
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 9
Thousand Arms
Breath of Fire 3
Breath of Fire 4
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Destiny 2(also goes by the name Tales of Eternia)
Valkyrie Profile
Grandia
Front Mission

Tekken 3 is pretty great too.

Yeh, a lot of games from that era are pretty rough to go back to. I recently played through Vagrant Story which is on every 'best of' list for PSX but fuck me the menu and UI is an absolute clunky mess.

All 3 original Resident Evil games hold up well I'd say. Tank controls feel a bit weir at first if you haven't played them in a while but are easy to get used to and work well.

Both PSX Spider Man games are fun and play pretty well.

Intelligent Qube/Kurushi Final holds up (probably because of how simple it is) and is a fun puzzle game.

All games made by Square (maybe excluding parasite eve)
Spyro trilogy (many people love these games, but I think they're too dumped down, 1 is decent but not the best design, 2 is for IQ<85, 3 is decent)
Crash trilogy (1 has bad design choices, 2 is a perfect game, 3 is bloated with shit still good basic mechanics)
Crash team racing (the best kart racing game, before Mario Kart 8 and Nitro Fueled)
Castlevania Symphony of the Night (one of the best game of all time, aged perfectly)
Silent Hill (decent experience, would recommend playing 2 on pcsx2 instead)
Tomba (another upvote because this game is underappreciated, good medroid-vania)
Metal Gear Solid (it is still a decent visual novel, if low poly doesn't bother you, great if you want to revisit the series)
Tekken 3 (another upvote)

Edit: added some games

Megaman X4 is probably the single best MM game made between the NES era and the GBA MMZ games. It's even worth playing twice because X and Zero handle so differently.

I'll say what hasn't held up, though: Crash, Tomb Raider, and Tenchu. Complete garbage, all of them. Tenchu in particular is practically unplayable.
