Not religion, but the CCP/the Chinese seem to strike a particular chord among Redditors I've seen. They defends the Chinks under certain circumstances and hate them in other contexts. Questioning their involvement with COVID is "conspiracy theories" and mocking their bad behaviour is hate speech against vulnerable peoples. But when the CCP does CCP things like censorship or their treatment of China's minority populations, everyone comes out to say fuck China/the CCP.

So, autistic as it is to brag about a reddit victory, this event made me laugh enough that I felt it worth sharing. I'll try to spare details though.

So five years back I had commented on a Tolkien-related topic, basically another one of those shit "is it okay for adaptations to change things?" issues that I hate because defenders of the movies never acknowledge actual problems but instead act like people just can't handle change.

Whatever. The topic dies... but then a week ago, someone finds one of my fuck-old posts and decides to respond. Which is bad enough, but he responds with the exact same vapid shit I already debunked.

So after trying to give him the benefit of the doubt (I'm too nice sometimes) I realize he's just a tard....

His most recent post had been paragraphs of tardery, basically trying to pull the whole "it doesn't matter because it doesn't personally affect you" thing. His final line is directly ordering me to ask him whether or not he would care if I said I were gonna watch the Hobbit movies.

Instead, completely out of left field, I ask him, "why do you hate black people?"

The hilarious part, he responds, ignoring my post and pretending I had actually asked the retarded Hobbit question. I had actually anticipated he would do this, so I was planning to respond by saying "typical racist, always dodging the question." But by the time I saw the notification and had clicked over to the thread, he had deleted all his posts and I think even his account. I think he must've figured out what my plan was.

My hypothesis as for why that's the case is that the upvote system encourages people to construct the wittiest, least-substantial comments they can in order to farm the largest number of instinctual upvotes as possible. What makes this even worse is the fact that heavily-downvoted comments on posts are hidden, so there's an actual incentive beyond "le internet points" to appeal to the greatest number of people possible. Doing otherwise is sabotaging your ability to engage in conversation on the platform.
