I do agree with you that there are some wildly disconnected numbers going on about it, though at this point in our history we should be treating the planet alot better than we do now. We should consider that we have to live here until we develop faster than light travel and should nip this problem in the bud so that it doesn't get any worse. Using the planet like we have one to go back to in case this one goes to shit is a smart idea in principle. Overwatch 2 is the one that requires a non-VOIP/non-prepaid phone number in order to stop "toxic" chat and smurfs. Blizzard wrote a blog post (Archive) stating this.

Overwatch 1 didn't do these shenanigans.

People freely give their phone numbers to Valve, since it is required to play ranked in DOTA 2. And it's not like the phone requirement actually does anything to stop smurfing, or toxicity, in that game.
