It's the story of Abraham that is used in Handmaid's Tale as a justification. The wife of Abraham gave him her slave to rape and bear a child, even though the moral of the story is that the wife just had to wait until god granted her a pregnancy. Leaders (religious or otherwise) were always hypocritical, i.e. kings and their mistresses or catholic priests and their servants, it's the most realistic part of the story. Also very realistic, the powerful hoarding the resources (here: fertile women) for themselves. The joke of the story?
The commanders are infertile. If a handmaid gets pregnant it's often by someone else.
The author used mostly Iran as an inspiration, the book was released in the mid 80ies, the iranian revolution happened in 1979.
It sounds even more underwhelming now.

Christianity is literally several steps up from its contemporaries in regards to its treatment of women, what with how Jesus was all-in on "Treat women as well as you treat men" and "Women can actually guide men on their path to salvation". But here I am, having actually read His book and not just read a bunch of fedora-tipper talking points.
Note how it's always Christianity with them

Too indoctrinated, or scared, to make fun of other religions, so they go for one that is least likely to fight back when attacked

It’s more that they feel personally violated by Christianity having been forced to spend Sunday mornings in a church growing up and having to say grace at Thanksgiving with all the Christian aunts and uncles they loathe. It’s the heatmap chart where they like the outsiders more than those closest to them. A leftist fish would say how great the air is while calling water fascist

Right, but the fish wouldn't be found dead shoving a banana up it's pooper, which still makes it less deranged.

The heatmap chart is total bullshit. Lefties overwhelmingly live around, marry and associate with other middle class, white, politically leftie people. They can talk about how much they love black people until their faces are blue but they won't live around them ever. It's all performative.

Leftism is performative to its core. That's the whole attraction of it to these types

Funny just how many "gifted children" come out of the woodwork on Twitter, Reddit and Tumblr to talk about being burned out. You'd think 85% of any given graduating class was gifted with the way you can find so many of them.

Dig a little deeper and for most of them, their "gifted" status goes no further than being in advanced math or an accelerated reading program, maybe took a few AP classes, and being "burned out" was getting to college or harder courseloads and overestimating their ability to juggle procrastinating all their assignments until the last minute, and cry about the applause and awards from being "advanced" die out and they fall into the middle of the pack.

Then they swarm any post about an actually rare gifted student to talk about how miserable their life was and how bad it's going to continue to be unless they take a gap decade to smoke weed and "figure themselves out."
A lot of gifted kids were pushed by their parents to be gifted.

Early on in their development, the child had a good grasp of something -- communication, art, memorization -- and their Gen-X parents lovingly formed a hallucination of their child being the next Einstein.

Theres a difference between a bright kid and a whiz kid, and parents were optimistic that their child was a whiz kid. The parents, and the school probably as well, pushed their kid to be part of the gifted program. The kid took a test to get in, passed, and earned this marker that designated them as smart.

American primary education is not demanding. Its not hard to get A's if you're bright. Being somewhat bright, told that you are, being expected to be bright, and dealing with fairly easy classes creates a child that doesn't know what hard work is and doesn't grow.

Also, the child was early to develop. That doesn't mean that they will keep developing at that pace for the rest of their youth. Most of these children likely had an early cognitive growth spurt and were left in the lurch whenever their peers caught up to them. Ergo, you get an army of young adults who feel "burned out" because everyone caught up to them and they couldn't be special anymore

r/nba decided to permaban the only guy consistently posting video highlights in the sub for a bogus reason: https://old.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1k8airm/free_mrbuckbuck/

Whole subreddit is up in arms and criticizing the mods for that. After banning twitter, and now banning the only guy uploading the kind of content people subscribed for, you have to wonder what's the purpose of the sub anymore.

It is quite funny that Canadians are so bereft of literature that Handmaid’s Tale is trotted out as one of their most acclaimed works. German lit has Goethe and Kafka, France has Balzac and Celine, Russia has Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy, America has Faulkner and Hemingway…and this is what Canada has.
It's not even set  in Canada, which is the funniest part.

It's set in like Boston IIRC, a heavily Catholic city and a center of New England Protestantism as well, which is... not at all like the fundamentalist Islamic style Christianity in the book. (Christian groups, at least Baptists, are pointed out in the book as being in resistance against the Gilead regime.)

In the book itself it's even hinted that it was the last gasp of reactionaries since it's pointed out that the USA fell apart after it. Unlike Iran, which is still strongly together and Islamic nearly 50 years after the Revolution.

The book was written back in the 80s, it was somewhat assumed that the Islamic Republic might collapse at any time since it was still in its formative years (it was established in 1979, after all). There was optimism that the Iran-Iraq War would've 'knocked some sense' to the Iranians as Iraq was briefly seen as this (comparatively) secular hero up against Khomeini. There even was plenty of Iranian emigres who were fully prepared, waiting all over the world in Paris to L.A., hoping that once Khomeini croaked, they'll be back to a newly restored democratic Iranian government. Of course that aged like milk.

The only atheists I can respect are those who actually hate all religions and will gladly call out pedophile mohammadeans, cow dung eating hindoos, and kikes as much as Bible thumpers. I think that strain of atheism existed on like the very oldest threads of r/atheism (I'm talking like 2008 to 2010).

Sadly, those pretty don't exist anymore. All the sensible atheists I know who were somewhat like that, ironically, converted back to Christianity or at least became Christian but secular (tho still TKD and TMD). A lot of the rapefugee shit after the Arab Spring causes a whole schism in the atheism community.

I don't get the right panel, too autistic to decipher. Is it an atheist encountering someone similar to them but refuses to acknowledge?

Bored at work today, so I was browsing my favorite corner of Reddit schizophrenia (aka: the so-called 'Asian Identitarian' sphere which is basically just r/aznidentity and r/AsianMasculinity) and oy vey! These ching chongs are flying too close to the sun, shut it down!
