They are actually. The site started with bots and fake users(
Source). Even now, at least half of the posts on the frontpage are bots (
Source), even if they're not bots, the content is similar and brainless because
92 out of the top 500 subreddits on reddit are controlled by just 4 people. Many of those mods are also in the top karma users, and they're mostly bought by corporations, corporations that also use bots to upvote the content and therefore keeping creating an amazing circle of karma farming.
I'm pretty sure there's actual comment bots as well. There's the generic copy-paste text ad bots of course but something weird I often encounter are comments that don't advertise anything and are grammatically correct but make no sense, I thought they were schizos or retards but lurking
