It's pretty much the end of an era. The British monarchy is stupid but getting rid of it while QE2 was still there would have been too disrespectful. She's been an institution since well before I was born and lived up to the name of Elizabeth I.

Still it's about time they get rid of that silliness, especially with a stupid git like Charles succeeding to the throne. End the monarchy on a good note.

I don't have the article handy, but I read somewhere that around a third of Australians that are in favour of the monarchy believe that Australia should become a republic after the Queen dies. This is in addition to the 45% of Australians that voted "yes" to becoming a republic in 1999.

Now she has passed away, I wouldn't be surprised if Australia has another referendum on becoming a republic in the next 5 years. This time it might even stick, assuming I haven't screwed up my math.

They should probably try making it an actual republic where the public is allowed to discuss things without the government shutting them down, because I'm pretty sure it hasn't been the Queen doing that shit.

Hopefully in becoming a republic they will also enshrine a bill of rights, as Australia is the only Western democracy without one, and it fuckin’ shows.
