RIP Thread

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Just wanted to log in for a short time to say that Bob Newhart's death hits far worse than finding out that Betty White died.

My father loved Newhart so much that he always had that show on more than Cheers, M*A*S*H and the Mary Tyler Moore Show every evening when I was younger. His straight laced and straightforward humor could never be duplicated and it was a joy to see his serious facial expressions match with the absurd humor on the show.

Either way, Bob Newhart is a legend and it will be funny to see what his humor is like in heaven.

I mentioned Bob's death to a coworker yesterday and she immediately started gushing about how great he was on...

...The Big Bang Theory.

I desperately wanted to tell her to shut the fuck up, but I'm a better person than that.
“REEEEE!!! YOU DIDNT WATCH HIM ON THE CORRECT TELEVISION SHOW!!! FUCK YOUUUUUUU”

but I'm a better person than that
I commend you. I probably wouldn't be.

One of Newhart's best bits in any show he did was this from Newhart, where his character, Bob Hartley is shanghaied into appearing in a pilot for an atrocious sitcom featuring his boss' spoiled wife (Julia Duffy). The show is like the Patty Duke Show with less convincing "doubling" the star as twins, and features hackneyed contrivances beyond anything the likes of Three's Company produced.

Newhart really gives it his all in a portrayal of "bad" acting, not at all hiding his lack of enthusiasm or how little he wants to participate in this show.

"Cheer up, twins. Your mother is in a better place now."
"You mean the bottom of Lake Titicaca?"
"No. On the shores of (shakes head, rolls eyes) Lake Heaven. Where nobody ever gets tangled in fishing line."

I honestly didn't know that there was someone of South Asian origin (Bangladeshi, although technically it was still part of India when his parents emigrated) in the Four Tops, I just assumed that they were all black. Then again, the only member of the Four Tops I could name off the top of my head was Levi Stubbs and even that's mainly because of his performance as Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors (1986).
