It's both.

Like every other chimp owner, Sandra treated Travis more like a human child instead of the wild animal that he actually was, and as such, when he became full-grown, she couldn't manage him, and naturally he eventually got out, and hurt someone.

Interestingly, it's been speculated that in addition to being strung-out on Xanax, Travis might've also attacked Charla because he did not recognize her even though she was a family friend because she had a new hairstyle, and because of that, he mistakenly thought she was just some stranger messing around with his stuff when he saw her holding one of his favorite toys.

It should go without saying, but Travis, and Charla are not at fault for what happened. The blame lies solely on the Sandra who was her own bucket of crazy, and if she was still alive, there's a good chance she would have her own thread here.

I meant the woman he attacked, not his owner.
Had her face ripped off, was blinded, lost most of her fingers, had a face transplant later on, but it got infected, so it had to be removed, and so on.

No, she had a hand transplant that had to be removed. The face transplant worked. There are 3D images of what her face looks like and lemme tell you: that chimp literally caved in her face. It's a miracle she survived. Her lips and eyes were gone, her cheeks hollowed out, her jaw bones caved in. Experienced surgeons needed therapy after seeing her. Before she got the face transplant, she looked like she had giant fish lips as it was nothing but scar tissue. It cost millions to treat. Pentagon wanted civvies for their experimental face transplants so they took her in. She literally had nothing to lose. Boston Women's Hospital did it and it took 20 hours.

Not just Sandra, but her husband who also raised the chimp with her. He died and she was the only one looking after the Chimp. She really should have had him moved to a zoo or somewhere they could take of him when he husband died. But they treated an animal like it was a child to them.

But yeah, if you have having problems sleeping, listen in to the 911 call. You probably won't be easy to sleep after that.
 
I remember a Jordan Peterson (pre-bennie breakdown) lecture wherein he relayed a story about Jane Goodall and how she initially believed that chimpanzees were what humans used to be, i.e. peaceful creatures living in peace and harmony and all that "if only humans could relearn to be like their distant cousins" bollocks, and how horrified she was and how she had to rethink her priors when she saw how chimps can really act both within their troupes and without.

At least that's what I recall anyway.
