He was prematurely aged for Cocoon. He was actually twenty years younger than most of his elderly co-stars, and only eleven years older than his screen daughter. He's one of those people who stuck looking like one age, in his case years before he actually was that old.

Calling him the Oatmeal guy worried me, though, because it made me think of the cartoonist first. Diabeetus definitely comes to mind for Wilford Brimley ads before anything else, for me.

Now I'm just trying to imagine a 6 year old boy being called Wilford. He didn't just have a quintessential old man face, he had a quintessential old man name as well.
