Hello all! I'm starting a new campaign soon and I'm trying to decide whether I want my players to roll their stats or go for the point buy system. Each method has its merits but I wanted an outside opinion on the debate. Naturally, for a tempered opinion on the matter I go to the most diverse place on the internet, the farms. Thoughts?

Depends on the tone and style of your group. Tell us more details.

Well, to be honest this is a group of mostly newbies in both the game and my table. I myself am also a new DM but I've played for a while. I think the game will be just a hack and slash romp with the standard save the world from the bbeg story. I'm just trying to figure out if randomization is the way to go for characters or to go for the more safe option of point buy.

If it's mostly newbies, I'd go with a point buy system. Normally, I enjoy rolling stats, but I think with new players it is best to keep everyone on a relatively equal footing until they get a feel for a system. I also think in a hack and slash setting, some of the fun in rolling stats might not be present, like getting a really low stat and then incorporating that into your character. Plus if it is combat based, you don't want to give new players the impression they just suck compared to someone else right off the bat who got way luckier roles.

Probably go with point-buy then. Maybe even go standard array, or full-out pre-gens. Get them playing the game as quick as possible.

Standard Array > Point Buy > Various Rolling Schemes unless you have experienced RPers in a heavy RP campaign.

Depends on the system, some i thought work better with one method while others work better with the other. I also think this could be an option for the poll

Since it's newbies I'd say a point buy system is best.
