The "Nail in the Coffin" was certainly the Trump Support Ban. But when did it begin? I don't know. It was kind of a "frogs in the pot" situation.

... "They didn't own slaves" wasn't the argument he was making, you dumb fuck. That's an argument against condemning all confederate soldiers because the Confederacy supported slavery. It's a very specific argument. The argument here was that the Independents weren't slave-owners at all.

For the dim-witted who still don't get it, the former is arguing "Despite being part of a slave owning organization, not all members of that organization owned slaves." The latter is arguing "This organization didn't support slavery to begin with, so condemning them as slavers because of some superficial/aesthetic resemblance to an organization that did is a spurious argument."

It was a slow slide at first but I think the break point was Occupy Wall Street/Gamergate. That was where they went from tolerating other views to demanding everyone post in lockstep under pain of banning.

One thing I remember happening, only sorta politically related...

The mods and the users used to have fun in Trouble Tickets. Future Villain Band was especially brilliant.

Then, at some point, users complained about it. If I remember right, at least one was a literal autist, and their complaint was they couldn’t separate the serious from the fun.

The entire tone of their metaforum changed almost overnight. The fun was banned, ostensibly because it had been ableist, but there was a strong undercurrent of “fuck you” to the whole thing. Like, the mods were pissed their fun was ruined, so they started taking it out on the users... “you want serious? We’ll show you serious!”
