I'm surprised you were able to get any fun out of it. I did an actual-play with my friends a long time ago and we could barely get anything running. And I don't mean it's too weird or something, the game is literally not finished. Parts are missing, and the math doesn't add up right.

Did anyone end up with a negative anal circumference?

I remember us having a hard time finding a lot of the right charts and numbers for stats and whatnot. Some were just not even there at all. I heard that was "fixed" in a later version but I can't comment on it.

It mostly turned into shitposting. @Splendid had to make some stuff up just to get it functional.

Speaking of bad games from the time RPGNET was somewhat palatable, has anyone here ever tried playing World of Synnibar?

People who moan about Lovecraft's racism are barely more cringy than people who try to excuse it. Because let's face it, Lovecraft was literally an ardent racist. You can't know him at all and pretend this isn't the case. His actual views are a lot more complex than the cherry picked shitposts he made from time to time, though.

There are a lot of things that are just objectively true, though.

He was an ardent supporter of Hitler before Hitler took office, and part of this was he literally just really liked Hitler's ideas about the Jews.

Yet at the same time, somehow he married a Jew (Sonia Greene). How did this make the remotest amount of sense? It didn't. His actual opinions and his actual behavior were often divergent.

Apparently, his personal interactions with everyone of every race he encountered were incredibly polite. He may have said incredibly offensive things in private but then he'd be entirely pleasant in person. He did not actually discriminate against people.

And if you've read his letters (which you should as they are some of the best things he ever wrote), he had vastly softened his racist views by the time he died and was actually ashamed of his earlier support of Hitler as well as other opinions he'd had. He died pretty young. Could he have come around to something like egalitarianism if he hadn't died so young? Who knows?

In any event the man should be judged by his actions, not just entirely by his words, and whatever he said, he was a pretty cool guy.

Thing is, this kind of knowledge, about Lovecraft and his complexities and the path of his life, used to be common knowledge among HPL fans and a part of the discussion about his work. Now though, people's idea about being a fan is avoiding anything that makes buying cute, pseudo-ironic plushies problematic.

Just give us what we want and we'll stop says sociopolitical movement that refuses to set an end goal.

Also check out that diversity: communism and anarchism. Truly rpg.net is home to posters from all across the political spectrum.

You can use your freedom of speech and speak out in favor of the thing we want you to speak out in favor of... or else.

That’s... that’s not what freedom means.

By this reasoning you had freedom of speech in Nazi Germany too. You could yell you hated the Jews as loudly as you liked.

Ok look, it's really simple and you're probably just sealioning and I really don't have the spoons to deal with this right now but let me explain how free speech works. If you're a good person then you use your speech to support good things, like deplatforming nazis and allowing twelve year olds to transition. But we need restrictions on free speech because not everyone is as enlightened and aware of their privilege as I am and will use their words in ways that hurts others. So no, we don't need free speech, we need responsible speech.

Fuck, I've been hanging around these people too long

Is it wrong for me to wish that most of the RPGnet admin would go play in traffic, and get hit by cars?

All I can think of is some fresh faced teenager who's getting into D&D, wants to learn more, and he wanders into RPGnet like an innocent waif...
And just like that, the next generation of the hobby dies, whether to bring indoctrinated by these chucklefucks or getting disgusted and walking away

RPGnet is increasingly irrelevant, because forums are a dying medium; even people a couple years younger than me primarily use Discord servers and shit like that to talk about tabletop.

Not to mention every other RPG forum more or less hates RPG.net with the noted exception of Onyx Path Forums (since they're both mostly run by the same people)

Even left-leaning forums like Giant in the Playground look at RPG.net as wacko crazies

How's GitP doing these days? It's been years since I was last there, but I got tired of the smug self-righteousness, mods constantly "scrubbing" everything, and Rich Burlew patting himself on the back for how brave and progressive he was when Haley gave an in-story apology for showing her belly button and using gendered insults.

Haven't lurked there in a while, to be honest
