RPGnet Forums

In a bit of a cow crossover, The Big Purple's thread about GenCon mentioned the troon who looks like Yaniv and allegedly assaulted someone there. Time will tell if the drama will snowball.

Oh cool, its that time again. I think this is the third thread about how Browncoats are really crypto-Confederates so just refer to the earlier posts in this thread.

Fun fact, you know the only place slaves are mentioned on the show? On the core worlds.
You know it's remarkable how a single second or two in a scene can illustrate a lot about the problems with Whedon's work. That unnecessary added focus on Kaylee 1:03 to 1:05. Every actor had already responded excellently to the line and could have continued from there but no, had to put in another double-take because "tee hee witty line."

On topic pretty unsurprised they're digging Firefly out to whack it again. Vast majority of them have moved on from it anyway since there's modern less problematic material to consume instead.

As an L5R player I am filled with indescribable rage.

Yeah, the setting was kind of idealized, that's what made it fun. It's not like Japan has a giant southern wall used to keep out invaders--

Oh. Now I know why they hated it.

I'd say why don't these people just sit alone in their dark rooms and cry every day but then I realize that's how they have the time to moderate RPG.net.

I'm pretty sure they multi-task. Crying, coping, seething, and moderating all at the same time, from the dismal dungeon of their darkened rooms.
I’m going to go out on a limb here, and say that they’re all either living in their parent’s basement and/or are on SSDI for some vague ailment like IBS or “depression” because the SS administration got tired of dealing with their appeals.

Moderation for any sane person with a life is just thankless trash hauling that you try to get over with.

These joyless fucks OTOH trawl entire threads, read every single post trying to find some paragraph to hang their faggotry on, go through a member’s entire post history because of two lines the member forgot they wrote an hour later, and even play pretend-court with each other, discussing “infractions” to hand out “punishments”.

In other words: They spend hours on it every day. Hours that someone with a job, friends, family and a life just doesn’t have.

The entire site is like a self designed make work program for terminally cancerous neckbeards.

This is unsurprising. I fit that 40-something demographic, and I stopped going to RPG.net sometime ~2003, about when the old World of Darkness was winding down. Things were only starting to get bad. Tangency was a snakepit, but it was pretty contained, and there was no banhammer just for supporting right wing views. In the intervening years, the place has become such a flaming garbage pit I can't imagine any new gamers going there without already being fully indoctrinated in the wokist cult.
There's no useful RPG information or discussion on RPGnet forums; the forums exist almost solely as a hugbox now. Why would a new person join?
Another of the site's old favorites is thrown on the pyre.

Wait a minute. Wait just a goddamned minute. So Firefly is problematic because the evil home government bears some similarities to the US government during Westward expansion, and that's bad because it's the same US government that was in charge of Reconstruction, and the South were the bad guys, which makes the US government from the period 1866-1899 the good guys.

This also happens to be the period of the Indian Wars. So, simultaneously, we cannot portray the strong, central, wealthy, imperial state as bad, because the US government in the latter 19th century was good, but we also can't portray it as good, because the US government in the latter 19th century was bad, which is why we can't portray any sort of dangerous borderland savages at all, because the Indians were good.

:story::story::story:

Edit: And reading further, Japan in the first half of the 20th century was bad, so we can't do or say anything that reminds us of that Japan, but we just presume Japan was "good" before that, but then we still can't draw from that because that's racist.

I'm pretty sure that they'll start shitting bricks if someone brought up how regimented feudal Japan was.

In fact, quite an few Asian countries have some bigoted skeletons hanging in their closets.

"Why didn't you make a safe space for women in the 80s to game, you bigot? Also, while we aren't denying your personal experiences, we are asking that you not speak about them as they contradict The Narrative. I mean, who are we supposed to believe, you, or Season 4 of Stranger Things?"

> women and girls have always been in the hobby
And then these same idiots will claim that women were prevented from gaming for decades because "muh gatekeeping".

If you don't want to refer to people that have developed to produce large immobile gametes from conception as female, then stop saying that women includes transwomen. Sometimes people need to delineate gender from sex, and that's how it's going to go if you're holding the term hostage, janny.

At least in the late 2000s, most of the active mods were living in a single shared apartment, and you got the sneaking suspicion it was some sort of polyamorous arrangement with people living on the dole and in squalor. One of the site's worst mods, Curt, was basically allowed to be an arbitrary little tyrant because he was sharing the place, and could not be kept away from the mods' computers.

It probably has not gotten better, since this generation was at least not made up largely of troons.

When you at all try to fairly portray a culture prior to Western contact, you get accused of racism, since the woke narrative is that patriarchy, heteronormativity, etc, are impositions of white supremacy on the rest of the world, so portraying anything from Aztecs to Samurai as in any way worthy of criticism means you're "reinforcing negative ethnic stereotypes."
