they replaced quest cut-scenes with literal image slideshows.

I've never touched RS3, but looking at the list of Cutscenes on the wiki, it does look like they went from Chatbox/Cinematic with ocassional Artwork, into mostly Artwork with some Cinematics.

It's...okay, quality-wise? Passable? Mostly it just reminds me of the cheap animated comics you see in budget games, where they don't want to spend the time modelling and animating one-off characters. Not a big fan.

Some of the earlier images in these cutscenes were events too massive to render ingame such as the Elder God Ful erupting out of the Anachronia (Fossil Island) volcano:

Instances like this are fine but Jagex got way too set in their ways with using this method of storytelling. It's gotten a bit lazy.

Images like these do look alright, but... honestly, the actually animated stuff looks quite a bit better. I can understand using the slideshows occasionally - animation can be pretty difficult sometimes - but overusage, like what @Focken Kiwi said, tends to look rather lazy after a while.

Shame, really; Runescape was pretty awesome back in the day.

Now they have a tranny content creator uploading to the main runescape channel lol

I find it odd when trannies don't even try to work on their voice, this was from over a year ago where they talk about how they attempted suicide. I made it 37 seconds in but that's just me.

Wasn't he roofied and assraped or something like that? After going through that and trooning out I'm surprised he hasn't successfully 41% yet

I have no idea, this is my first exposure to him. I just find it weird. If this person is so dysphoric as to take their own life then I don't see how they can get Internet asspats when their voice sounds the way it does. The cognitive dissonance would make me kill myself tbh. At least sound really gay and "feminine."

On topic: OG Runescape (2d) was the shit.

RuneScape will be closing their official forums after 20ish years in favour of the unholy grooming trinity: Discord, Reddit and Xwitter.

You  will get groomed for a bond.

On another note, I quit RS3 about a month ago. Had been ~True Trimmed since 2 years but I can't be bothered anymore.

I always find it annoying when mouthbreathers like Asmongoloid and Josh Strife Hayes say that sandbox MMOs will never be successful considering the continued endurance and popularity of Old School Runescape.

I thought Joshua Strife Hayes changed his opinion when group ironman released.

He doesn't play it much, 'cause his career demands his attention with other games, which is fine.

Both games are held up by nostalgia and sunk-cost. I played Ironman on both, mostly OSRS, on and off since 2014. I got Bofa shortly after going 2K dry in Corrupt Gauntlet around 2022. The sunk-cost realization hit not long after and I haven't had the desire to play much since. I still had a big chunk of endgame to do and did not want to face going dry on fucking OSRS again. Even with all the supplies and money I got from Corrupt Gauntlet, it's all inevitably going to be eaten in death costs, equipment charges, Construction, etc.

Gameplay-wise, RS3 has way too many chores to do before you can PvM. God forbid you're an Ironman, it's like 2 or 3 hours of prep for 1 hour of combat. Of course it's easier with the MTX shit which surprise surprise, the game won't get a meaningful update or roadmap for weeks but they'll ensure any issue with MTX is fixed immediately. There's too much shit crammed in the F2P areas. They should've spread some of it to the areas they're currently updating graphically. I believe Armadyl's big ass floating shit rock is still near Falador; that was probably the earliest instance I can remember saying "this doesn't belong". Shit like that should just be removed. The quests are good. Newer ones don't seem that bad but they're blatantly drip-feeding story, maybe trying to keep people around to see the conclusions in 7 years unless they decide to unceremoniously drop the story.

OSRS is good. They're not getting new players but they can retain them with the hampster wheel. It's like the South Park heroin "catch the dragon" game. Seems the OSRS team is "on the ball" and has a better grasp of their niche. Just sucks the game eats your time.

I think RS3's failure is inevitable and I predict the uncertainty following it will at least hurt OSRS. Despite the mods fighting against it, someday that "no MTX in OSRS" dam is going to blow due and people will rightfully quit. But it's never too early to swallow all that time you lost running rooftops and moving on from the game.

This week's update: a recolored outfit you originally had to gamble for. The recolor doesn't come with the weapon skins the original had. For the low low price of 423 RuneCoins, you can get some shitty Djinn outfit.

Someone on Reddit did the math, the closest RuneCoin bundle you can get gives you 420 so they're making you buy another bundle for the other 3. And this was the headline update, no content for the game, just patch notes after announcing hours to enter a beta anyone who's going to participate in already is, and the next "rotation" for their Treasure Hunter (gambling).

Surprisingly decent amount of patch notes. I think they should lead weekly updates without any content with the patch notes and end with the buyable cosmetic. It'd at least go down smoother.

Still no roadmap. From what I read the Devs are only confident giving a 2 month roadmap anyway. It's crazy how many "GameJams" they had last year and there's hardly anything to show for it.

Watching RS3 burn helps me realize OSRS isn't worth going back to.

got 126 combat on OS over the weekend (still 1 prayer to go), pretty sure i'm going to burn out before getting anything else there

No roadmap for 2024 was one of the reasons I didn't bother resubscribing. The only thing to look forward to were PvM changes for Melee/Ranged/Magic from the recent betas, which look fun and cool, but that's all there is.

Grats @Giant Kozaky 🎉

Still no update on the stream which was supposed to be an update on when the 2024 Roadmap would be out but they made sure to announce Double XP during this radio silence :story:

I think it was a year or two ago it came out that most of Jagex's money was from subscriptions and the majority of the players are playing OSRS. Jagex might be in this weird position where the paypig game isn't their top earner so it makes more sense to work on the consumer-friendly game. It's good for OSRS players, they can say "at least my game doesn't have MTX" while they waste months grinding a skill because increasing XP rates would make the people who already wasted months feel bad.

This leaves legitimate non paypig RS3 players in the position where they're not getting anything but vague promises of a stream to let them what they can look forward to (but subject to change) down the line. Not enough people play RS3 to make it worthy of updates. If the paypigs are happy by rotating the MTX promotions, that's most of Jagex's work done on RS3.

I feel bad for RS3 players because they were the loyal ones. When EoC came out they stuck around, when MTX started creeping in they were fine with it because they thought it was a sacrifice to keep the game going, now almost every update has some MTX angle or promotion attached.

I was one of those that stuck around. I was never fine with the MTX though. I first started playing when I was in elementary when I overheard fellow classmates were talking about an online video game where you could "get drunk at a bar and punch women." I stuck with the main game since 2008 and played it off and on over the years. My first account got phished because I was a newer naive internet user that fell for a fake giveaway and my second account was banned during a 3 month break for macroing after a data breach. I've played an ironman since then mostly to get away from the microtransactions but then Hero's Pass soured me to RS3.

I'm just disappointed with Runescape now. I'd like to play OSRS but I'm having a hard time motivating myself to do so.

Plenty other MMOs out there thankfully. I'm going to pick up FF14 when I'm done with a couple of games. ...well, unless there's actually decent upcoming content for RS3, but I really doubt it.

Raven quit Jagex, only returning a few months back to work on the lore for an undisclosed game (possibly an MMO). There's a faggot writing the lore for RS3 (and has been since the whole Moia/Trindine cringefest).
