RuneFest announcements for 2027:
  • As mentioned in an earlier blog post, Vampyrium and the thirtieth skill are not planned for 2027. They're still in the works, not shelved or anything, but they're being pushed to a later date. In the former case, they didn't want the Havenhythe/Vampyrium story to take up too much time and detract from other storylines. In the latter, they want to give it more development time to release such a milestone skill in as good a state as possible.
  • Big announcement is the launch of Runescape Reignited:
    • Launching December 2nd, with all Reignited characters having free membership access for the first ten days (through the 12th)
    • New character type that is able to interact with and play alongside veteran characters, but with its own independent economy starting from scratch
      • Reignited characters can chat with and join clans and homesteads of veteran characters
      • They cannot trade with veteran characters (direct or through the GE) and cannot group with them for bosses
      • Reignited characters have their own GE independent of the existing one, so they can still trade but will have to build up supplies as a community
      • In addition to accessing all existing worlds, Reignited characters can play on exclusive Reignited-only worlds
      • Reignited characters have their own hiscores and world-firsts, as well as a Hall of Legends in-game where world-first players will be commemorated
      • No MTX-based progression at all (no Radiant Stars), only cosmetics
    • Much like Ironman, you choose to create a Reignited character at creation, and you cannot change it to a veteran character later
    • The goal is to create the feeling of starting fresh in a new MMO, except with the benefit of having over 25 years of development and content, andwith an economy not skewed by years of MTX
    • Reignited characters may eventually be folded into the main game in the future, but there is no planned date for this, they want the mode to stand on its own for a while
  • Now for the year ahead:
    • Remastering the whole game:
      • Planned to take place over the course of 2027, with early game remaster coming December 2nd
      • Not just graphical remasters, but remastering old content as well (screenshots of remastered Tutorial Island in the post)
      • Bringing old quests up to modern standards, as well as making early quest bosses actually feel like boss encounters
      • Making skilling easier to understand, improving skill guides, and making sure XP pacing is adequate
      • Improvements to the UI and removing clutter from it are also planned
    • Adventure Guide:
      • An updated version of the old Path system, launching on December 2nd
      • Provides level-appropriate guidance on what to do next, with tasks that feed into higher-level gameplay
      • Goal is to have it work as a guide for all skill levels, but you can always ignore it and do your own thing as you like
    • Road to Restoration continues into 2027:
      • Unified collection log
      • Grouping System rework
      • Clan finder and clan improvements
      • Quest timeline rework
      • Rebalances, clean-ups, and more Remaster updates
      • Other minor issues like clickboxes, unwanted camera rotations, world server improvements, and more
      • Ninja Team will also return to tackle small side issues
    • Updates will now be themed around Arcs, a group of updates structured around a narrative core lasting roughly four months
    • Arc 1: Hoard of Dragons
      • New master quest, Dragon Slayer II, where we face off against a gilded dragon and learn more about Oziach's past
      • New area, Dragon Isle
      • Thieving, Firemaking, and Hunting/Slayer content planned
      • Find seals while training to access hidden vaults, and eventually the grand treasure room itself
      • Grandmaster Clue Scrolls are being added, with new rewards like gilded dyes, the return of aurora and soul dyes, and new furniture including a dye fountain
      • Meek the meerkat pet that lost out in the poll for the Treasure Trail pet is also being added finally
      • Treasure Trails will get some other targeted improvements as well, including a short tutorial quest
      • Agility rework is also coming, with movement abilities being properly integrated, possibly a new one being added, run energy being made more meaningful, and agility training getting an overhaul to give options for different intensity levels
    • Arc 2: City of Gnomes
      • New grandmaster quest, The Curse of Arposandra, finally concluding the gnome questline fifteen years after the last quest
      • New area, Arposandra, fully accessible once you finish the quest
      • New boss, Glouphrie the Untrusted, fought once during the quest and available afterward
      • New community skilling boss, Argento's Nightmare, always accessible and non-instanced, show up and contribute any time, earning Woodcutting, Firemaking, Divination, and Farming experience
      • Existing gnome quests will also be remastered as part of this update, including new post-quest content if you've already done them all, as well as graphical remasters of the Tree Gnome Village and Stronghold
    • Arc 3: Secrets of Karamja
      • Join the Archaeology Guild as they work to uncover what lies beneath Karamja
      • New raid, the Temple of Ah Za Rhoon, with multiple bosses culminating in a fight against Witch Queen Rashiliyia
      • Learn more about the Archaeology Guild and its past
      • More to be revealed later on
    • Runescape Plugins beta to launch on October 6th, including five plugins like Quest Helper

While I won't be participating in Reignited (starting over still doesn't appeal to me outside of something like Leagues), it'll be interesting to see how it goes and if it can help drum up more participation in RS3. And the new updates look pretty interesting, especially finally getting the gnome quest conclusion. Hopefully the second raid works out better than Mazcab.

also please someone else reply to this thread, I don't want to end up quadruple posting

Seems a bit light on new content, but i guess we'll see.

people are not happy about this on account of it sounding like they're throwing in the towel and saying the MTX "taint" of hi scores (who gives a fuck) and other accomplishments cannot be fixed (again, who gives a fuck) and the economy can't be fixed so just start it all over. Reignited are basically a global group ironman, and can't interact with Veteran players in any way. It's making it sound like they're making a second class of player who gets to enjoy a fresh economy and all this shit. I mean the article even says "the way it was meant to be played" like all this shit meant nothing.

The actual content announcements sound cool as fuck though, and I hope the players niggering and chimping out gets this shit canned like MTX and hero pass before it.

I do think a lot of the reactions are a little hyperbolic ("this is gonna KILL RS3 FOREVER!!!" and the like), but it does seem like kind of a waste of time. The game should be able to stand on its own and not need some kind of gimmick to get people to come in and start playing fresh. And since there's no way for veteran and Reignited characters to play together, you end up with two parallel worlds that have pointless roadblocks between them. A fresh economy is an interesting idea on paper, but I don't think it'd be all that interesting in the long term, and eventually once it matured it would be no different from the base game.

And that's without getting into the fact that existing players would need another subscription to play since you're still limited to one character per sub. Either that or you'd have to abandon your old account.

The other stuff does look good though, hopefully there'll be more that wasn't announced coming down the pipe too.

Also I posted too soon, because RS4 has also been announced. Built in Unreal, set in the Sixth Age in Ashenfall a few years after the events of Dragonwilds. Not replacing OSRS or RS3, a separate MMO planned to be supported alongside them. Still years from release, but they wanted to get the news out early.

At what point do Runescape MMOs cannibalize their own player base? Curious to see how an all new game will do though, assuming of course it doesn't get canceled like that science fiction one did.

i expect news on it in 2030 at the earliest tbh. From everything it sounds like they're doing Dragonwilds as an MMO which is funny because I feel like people played Dragonwilds because it isn't that. Or they like valheim.

I mean a WASD action RPG runescape MMO could be cool? I'd need to see what their idea is which we won't for the aforementioned reasons, it's still super early.

Quest timeline rework
This is such a huge project to have one throwaway bulletpoint for. I don't think they'll do anything but halfass it.
a separate MMO planned to be supported alongside them
This is my personal preference but I wish it was a straight up RPG. I mean shit what's so difficult about making a hack n slash about Zuk tearing shit up in the fight caves or following the exploits of the wise old man or Robert the strong or hell just remake some of the questlines as an adventure game with some non linear elements and grindan and you're golden.

Came across a video from a RS3 Youtuber very negatively reacting to the announcement of Runescape Reignited. He calls it the death of RuneScape 3 and views it as another fragmentation of the community. It does raise the point that if Reignited is successful, the old high scores and old economy might be left behind and if it is a failure, it will be seen as a joke.

There is an in-game riot going on due to the news.

It seems Jagex has used AI for the DS2 reveal trailer. /r/runescape is very upsetty about it! Here's the most popular thread (A)

Check out these awesome medieval kicks!

If you want to see more examples, here's a thread (A) for that.

It is kinda funny considering their very recent comment about how they do not want to use AI for any of their games. (L / A)

From the rumblings I saw the cope, or maybe hope, is that these were outsourced trailers, in which case they gotta ring up those jeets and get their money back.

Again, I think "DEATH OF RUNESCAPE" is a bit hyperbolic and premature, but I feel the bigger issue is indeed the fracturing of the community. All Reignited has going for it is a fresh economy and a new set of hiscores without MTX influencing them. However, the former would only be interesting for a short time until it started to mature, and even then the community would probably be relying on the veteran GE prices as a guideline anyway. The latter is only interesting to turbospergs that want to no-life grind to world's first 99/120/200m, but most people aren't going to be participating in that to begin with, and those grinds are already solved so it's just a matter of execution (and who can stay awake/trade accounts the longest). Once those are all taken, Reignited will be no different from the veteran side of the game, so there'd just be an arbitrary roadblock between the two games.

They were seriously hyping up some big announcement that was going to get everyone to return to RS3, and this was the best they could come up with? Literally all you had to do was just keep on revamping old content and adding new stuff, this was wholly unnecessary.

Looking around online there doesn't seem to be much positive sentiment regarding the announcement among existing RS3 players in particular. Lots of talk about diminishing history as well as player effort and how Reignited "world's firsts" won't be real.

There are a few people saying that they're looking forward to playing the game without the taint of MTX, but like...why? Yeah, over a decade of Treasure Hunter injected a lot of excess gold into the game, but the GE tax has been tackling a fair amount of that inflation since its introduction, not to mention other gold sinks that have been added. And nobody really cares that much about the hiscores or who's number one; long gone are the days where everyone chased Zezima all over the world.

The only saving grace I see is that they're open to the idea of eventually merging the two together in the future, but it really begs the question why they're going to the trouble in the first place if that's the case. Veterans don't want to spin up a new character, but they might feel forced to if they can't find people to play with. I think most would rather quit than start over from square one, and then Jagex is losing subs for no good reason.

Also apparently they got booed at the Q&A any time they brought up Reignited, so that's funny.

The audience cringing, frowning and having a worried look in their eyes is quite something. It must take alot to demoralize an RS3 player.

But honestly, fresh worlds is something that lame Korean MMOs do as a last ditch effort to get one last gasp of breath before ending service. It is a red flag.

Well, they put out a statement/apology about Reignited. It doesn't look like they're axing the plan entirely, but they did address the common complaints about it (veterans seen as lesser, fragmenting the community, economic issues, feeling pressured to start over). They're working on updated proposals and will have them out by the end of the week.

I honestly think they didn't expect this announcement to go over as badly as it did. Admittedly, I didn't really see an issue with it at first, just a different experience for players that I wasn't going to take part in. But the more I read others' thoughts on the matter, I did realize there could be some problems with its implementation over the long-term. I'm glad they're going to reevaluate it, though I still think the whole thing is a waste of dev time.

With 50+ days to go and already on the back foot it's safe to say it won't be anything at all like the original idea if it launches at all.

And the update post is out, where they respond more directly to various concerns about the plan. Summarized:
  • They're exploring ways to allow veteran players to have a Reignited character on the same account, letting you flip between your veteran and Reignited character whenever you wish. This would not require a separate membership.
  • They're working on exclusive cosmetics for veteran characters (like a special Max Cape variant) that can also be used if you choose to play Reignited.
  • In response to veteran worlds dying out if the playerbase shifts over to Reignited en masse, they're looking into how long Reignited-only worlds will exist, and potentially may remove them from the plan entirely.
  • They're looking into how long grouping between veterans and Reignited will be restricted, with the current thought being after the Reignited economy is stable and world's firsts are achieved.
  • While concerns about splitting the playerbase are being taken into consideration, they're keeping both potential communities in mind and will make adjustments as necessary if issues arise. They're also fine with existing players returning to play their veteran accounts instead of participating in Reignited.
  • They do not want veteran players to feel pressured into starting over if they don't want, and they will continue designing content for all levels of the community.
  • With regards to cosmetics on your account, they're also looking into ways to enable you to access those on a Reignited character. This also includes bank boosters so you wouldn't need to repurchase them should you choose to Reignite.
They're continuing to ask for feedback on these topics and whatever other concerns you might have. Personally, I think this feels better than the initial news about it, especially if they do allow for players to have both types of characters on the same account. I still doubt I'd really play Reignited, but at least if I did decide to, I wouldn't have to pay more for it.

There's a couple things here that are much better than the original pitch, I'm pleasantly surprised they even said they'd consider membership changes. But the big issue - the eventual fate of the veteran economy - is still in exactly the same limbo it's been in since day 1 of the announcement. The first Reignited page from Oct. 3rd says this:

What's the long term vision for Reignited characters? Will they ever be merged back into the same economy as the Veteran economy?

We want to first give Reignited a chance to stand on its own, without implementing an arbitrary cut-off period. There are no predetermined plans for a merge at this stage but we'll keep all options on the table in continuing to deliver what's best for players. For now, however, our main priority is to safeguard the economic stability of both Veterans and Reignited character types. As with Ironman, players have, over time, asked for changes in how the different character types interact. As RuneScape continues to evolve, we will be sure to be listening closely to ensure this is a character type that feels right within the wider RuneScape experience.
And today they've basically just said the same thing we already knew in different words. A merge is maybe on the table, without even some hypothetical criteria where they might start to consider one. For the sake of everyone on both sides of this debate, this was the one point they really needed to hammer out. Reason for the veteran side needs no explanation, but now the reignited side is going to feel that same uncertainty that we do right now. I've seen plenty of comments under the reddit post already saying they were very interested in the fresh start but are now turned off of even trying the game because of that uncertainty. Some are even turned off by just the compromise on grouping. Parts of this just fundamentally could not be compromised on the second they got the new crowd's attention, so I don't envy the spot they've put themselves in.

Also on a personal note I'm disappointed they seem to be going ahead with new world firsts on reignited. I'm fine with them for Irons/HC/etc since those have a different gameplay experience/restrictions compared to a main, but this is just Main 2.0. Only the real world firsts deserve those statues.

Wandered in here to see people talking about RS3 and not OSRS which was pretty amazing. I didnt know RS3 had that many people left in the first place.

I managed to max just before invention was added to the game, my opinion at the time was "man I never want to go through all this shit ever again", so I understand people not wanting to start over and have to do all the crazy content in the game, especially with all the new skills added.

Havent touched RS3 since then and just play OSRS which I feel is doing great, minus the whole bronzeman drama
