Anyone else here enjoy finding free shit on the side of the road?
I was very lucky last year and found some really good stuff :
50 inch flat screen with remote .
5 IKEA deltofs that looked brand new.
A nice office chair with minor scuffing.
An ugly as fuck office chair in perfect condition.
A bunch of DVDs, including 4 seasons of the sopranos.
A box of graphic novels and star trek books.
20 or 30 vinyl records of various rarity.
Fancy Halloween projectors.
Brand new Christmas lights (150 feet of them).
Silver plated tea pot and accessories.
Like-new doghouse (for the cat).

Anyone else find any good shit? Beginners I recommend going to a white neighborhood the night before trash day, you will get some good stuff.

I once grabbed a broken leaf-blower at the curb (it had a "free" sign next to it) on my way to a fishing spot. I did not need one so I just called my friend and asked him if he was interested in fixing one for use later. He came and picked up the leaf-blower and we fixed it the next weekend. Turns out it was a rather simple fix. My friend now uses the leaf-blower.
That said, I was biking through a section of riverfront homes so I suppose the owners could afford to toss a leaf-blower instead of fixing it.

I would evict people from properties with the local sheriffs department. %95 of the time people had left behind anything they deemed not worth taking. I found countless things, a police issued Kevlar vest, dozens of tools, I recently helped myself to a full propane tank. Anything that had a hard drive I would go through and see what if there was anything interesting but there never was. I spend a lot of time working with metal, mostly as a hobby building guns and elaborate tools for my business. People don't realize how expensive a piece of metal is sometimes, high grade steel like 4130 bar is very expensive. People throw away things like broken axles on cars, that's high grade steel, a 4lb round bar of that can be $50-$100 easily. Stainless is even more expensive. I don't take it to a recycler I just throw it in the big scrap bin in the garage for when I need a piece of metal for a project.

Wait a sec. Oh right. You open the door for them.

The propane tank is a win, but I have so many questions regarding the police issued kevlar vest.
Did the sheriff seize it as evidence?
Yeah in the middle of the winter $100 propane tank full of gas that can be used to heat up the garage is priceless. I would imagine this varies from dept to dept. The SD I worked with was so miserably backed up with work the moment I breached the door, they would draw sidearm, go in and spend no more than 10 seconds in every room. If there was another locked door they'd yell for me to breach. The only time I ever saw them care about personal property in a legal context was a Marijuana grow op, relatively small 15-20 plants. They just seized them are generic evidence and put them down for controlled destruction. They did not charge the occupant with anything. Honestly I forgot about that one till you asked that question. That was a weird one, white guy in his 40s. He kept trying to sell the sherrifs the wood panel flooring he had installed. "Hey deputy, you like the floor? I can get you the exact same bamboo pattern in almost any color, for super cheap!" We were not too early in the AM for the breach 10am I think? He and his female friend were in their bathrobes when we showed up and there was only one bed in the place, not really shocking until the sheriffs and I later found out they were cousins. 🤮 He was allowed to keep all his MJ grow equipment but, we never heard from his again and so he legally forfeited all his property. I sold the MJ grow equipment to some kid with a legitimate MJ grow license for his medical condition. IIRC he had severe arthritis or something for a 22 year old kid I felt terrible for him. Not even 30 and you want to wrench on your car or something and your hands hurt like your 70? good god.

I would wear level 2A kevlar to Sheriffs convictions if it was a shit neighborhood. The only means of knowing it was LE issue was around the back of the inner neck area. You could scratch that off if you wanted and nobody would ever know. If LE is performing a search warrant, NOT an eviction, they will take the 2 mins to inspect a kevlar vest and they will confiscate it. I heard of another LEO entity seized one but, not charging the person. It's not illegal to own kevlar and I'd imagine they would have to find the issued officer and reprimand him for letting LE equipment fall into peoples hands who shouldn't have it. IMHO cops will not charge someone with a minor crime if it means they have to objectively make a claim an officer acted in negligence. Nepotism and such.

I have to remind myself that weed is still controlled in America, unlike Canada where is largely legalized.

Was this in Alabama?

So he and his cousin just up and disappeared?

That was quite nice of you.

I would recommend Level IIIA.
I have seen negroids carrying 30 rounds extended magazines with their Glocks on many security camera videos.

That makes good sense.

Yes, exactly around $90 USD full with sales tax.

Well, it varies state to state. I briefly lived in Vancouver over decade ago. I recall the girl I was living with explaining to me BC law enforcement would come in take your grow equipment and plants and tell you "Don't you do this again , ya hear?" and leave. That was surprising to me.

I won't give away what location but, this is what I would call a "liberal faggot blue state" in a very large metropolitan city. There were no banjo's or methlabs.

I guess? I made money off this transaction, not truly altruistic. In these homes if I found clothing in OK condition or canned food, I would take that over to the homeless shelter or appropriate place, I gave a lot of clothes to the good will and another second hand shop that gave the proceeds to some kind of charity. I think it was a faith based substance abuse program? IDK. It seemed a horrible waste to throw away food and clothing. I feel bad throwing away perfectly good sealed food, I don't consider myself very sympathetic at all but, I have empathy I recall being fucking broke and living off nothing for a few years. This is the appropriate forum for this statement: I strongly feel if you grow up with less than others you will not just appreciate things greater but, you will be far far more savvy when it comes to running a business and understand cost overhead and being able to determine need vs want, especially in business context. If you look at a lot of self made millionaires they have 3 things. Intelligence, ambition, and appreciation for what they have and what they don't have. One of the men I most respect in this world is Adam Corolla. He's pictured on the right of Jimmy Kimmel, they are friends and worked together for years despite Adam being very conservative. Adam's mom was living off welfare when he was a kid, openly asked her "Mom, why don't we get off welfare, live a better life"? her reply was the effort was not worth it. He's a very interesting guy his net worth is around 20 million, started off life very blue collar and wanted more out of life and even though he became successful in entertainment he still ran a construction company and still worked with his hands on his own cars. He and I have a lot in common, I won't go into the details. I also really love his "Get off your fucking couch, and accomplish something today" attitude. He does not have much patience for the willfully lazy and willfully helpless. I suspect the reason he never got as far as Jimmy Kimmel was he did not gel with the liberal Hollywood bleeding heart bullshit. He's one of the few people in this world who can fix a car, get invited to the Oscars and win a racing event competing with actual professional drivers, people who race cars for a living.

Most of the time I never met the occupants. 15% of the time we'd announce our presence and they would come to the door and not make trouble, gather what they could carry and leave. I would arrange for them at a later date to open the property up to retrieve all the remaining belongings. Typically they would comeback with moving van or something. I tried to keep things civil as best I could there were some sketchy situations over the years. They did not like some kid "allowing them" to go in to their home and get their personal belongings in a supervised context. The day we went to the flooring salesman's place he and his cousin just answered the door in bathrobes like it was any other Tuesday, they did not act combative or even acknowledge the MJ grow op in the home. I asked them if there is anything they need to get from the property, gave them my biz card and they just never bothered to call me for anything. After the legally required amount of time passed all the property in the home was n longer theirs to claim.

I feel 2A is enough. I'm not expecting to be shot at with anything above a .44 Mag. I mean lets be honest here, kevlar is not magic, if someone is shooting at me with an actual rifle I don't think the kevlar is going to much good. 9mm/45./40 12 guage buckshot, I see as something that realistically I would have to deal with and it might do some good.

The older I get the more I realize cops are just people, most of them are good, some are absolutely fucking terrible and it's not uncommon to find quite a few lazy ones. I have had so many conversations over the years with law enforcement. I recall one time we went to property an shit neighborhood, we got to front door and the female deputy said "OK go to work". She did not even knock on the door. For obvious reasons it is %100 necessary any unexpected entry by LE needs to be declared out loud. Most deputy's would bang on the door for 20 seconds, yell "Deputy X, from X department, we are here for an eviction, come to the door right now" or something similar. I asked her "You didn't announced our presence"? , she was very offended I even asked, she did knock on the door and verbally state intentions and then turned me indignantly and said "Are you happy now"? something childish like that. Gee thanks, cunt I guess me being shot over your laziness was so very very rude of me to question.

Electronics. Always old electronics. I don't even need them. People know this about me and bring me their old computers and stuff, and I can't even say no. The more exotic or well built things I keep, the rest I fix up, clean and sell on eBay. It's a hobby really. I don't need the money. I also like to imagine I'm doing a good thing for the environment. It's kinda nuts sometimes what people want to throw away. Sometimes the fixes are more intricate (usually something in the power infrastructure died and ICs/passive components need to be replaced) but usually they're simple like a smashed screen in a laptop. (New panel off Aliexpress for $60, an hour of work and you can sell the thing for ~$250)

About a decade or two ago people used to bring me their very old 80s and 90s computers they found somewhere in their basements etc. and I've also been taking stuff like that home since the 90s, often from the side of the road. This doesn't happen anymore sadly but I've got a big collection now. (Could've never bring myself to throw that stuff away but before the retro craze nobody wanted it and it was quite literally junk) My favorites here are the non-PC platforms, the industrial PCs and the Laptops.

Ring me up when you get your hands on a gaming laptop that you can refurbish.
I need one to replace my old laptop.

When I used to live in an apartment, the amount of TVs and computers I came across to just simply resell the boards helped tremendously. Even stocked a tool box and a cabinet full of tools thanks to people using it as a dumping ground.

Also would never say no to a decent piece of wood or metal for potential projects, especially now with how expensive everything is getting.

I once considered getting into gold/silver/copper extration from electrionics but it wouldn't be worth it economically speaking. I might do it this year, but purely as a hobby thing not to make money. I do wonder if there is actually a possibility of working out a economically viable way of extracting platinum group metals like Platinum, Iridium, Palladium and Rhodium from the exhaust of cars with catalytic converters like Cody'sLab once did.

I also got stuff from my job once. Some stuff that they throw away goes straight to trash without processing and they let people look and pick anything they want. Not gonna dox myself but this meant I got a nice old (1960s-70s) topological map of my town and surrounding sea floor depth for free with a pretty nice wood frame on it. Makes for a great decoration on my living room.

Copper is relatively easy to extract, but not from electronics.

I believe there is a large industry based around catalytic converter theft, though I am unsure how of much this is just reselling the converters and how much is stripping them for their valuable metals.

I wish I had a set of topographical maps of my hometown, especially since things are going to hell in a handbasket.
It would make the coming war a lot easier for me.

My logic was that the extraction of gold from electronics means that some copper also comes alongside it, due to being mixed into the gold or from gold plated contact so might as well make use if it and separate to sell. Like I said though, not really worth it for many money unless I owned a scrapyard or had access to large amounts of cheap broken electronics to mess with.

The industry of catalytic converters and crackhead prospecting of them is entirely based on the metals inside the converters. It's a simple cylinder of metal with a mesh of ceramic inside where the ceramic is covered in the platinum group metals and it means that the exhaust from the combustion engine reacts and this destroys stuff like CO and NO destroying some of the worst pollution. After a few hundred thousand miles the metal gets ablated off and lost so the thing is replaced, which is why Cody was able to prospect some from exhaust in a highway and why crackheads try and steal them for drugs.

I briefly contemplated extracting gold and other minerals from electronics during my high school days but I ultimately wrote it off as a pipe dream due potential startup cost, toxicity, and the sheer amount of electronics needed to make it profitable.

Also, the quality of gold from these electronics is unknown. I doubt 24K gold is going into our electronics.

That is also my reason for not doing it, unless you have a literal business and can secure shipments of old electronic waste and have big industrial sized beakers and reaction vessels to process it you will never break even.

And you are right most of the gold tends to either be extremely thin 24k coatings or 18k stuff. The 18k stuff is normally cut with copper, hence why some would show up naturally when scrapping the stuff.

I'm currently renovating a house (it's why there's a huge gap in my posting - don't worry I still think men in wigs aren't women) and the previous people left a TON of stuff.
I'm using a shop vac they left, I bought a new one but returned it.
I'm gonna rent a big dumpster soon. How do I put out an APB to the neighborhood scavvies?
I also collect old vape cartridges and scrap metal and take it in to be recycled. I just do it for free cause a lot of people want to recycle but don't have the time or transportation. Are these things scavengers and rare metal guys would be interested in instead?

Any neighborhood message board (like Craigslist or Nextdoor or whatever people use in your area) will have something for posting curb alerts. If it's a lot of decent stuff, you might think of hiring an estate sale company, they sort it all out themselves in exchange for taking much of any sales revenue.
