Scorn Trailer Thoughts

I ran across this while browsing Steam Greenlight and it immediately caught my attention. From the looks of it, imagine if H.R. Giger and David Cronenberg made a first person shooter with an open world horror game. I personally can't wait to see how it ends up, it's dripping with atmosphere. It gets a big plus for supposedly having no HUD.

Thoughts?

This game first came to my attention a couple of years back, I believe it didn't even have a name then.

The visual style is remarkable, but I feel many will find it off putting. The cynic in me thinks it will be destined to be overlooked by most, but still talked about in certain circles in the years to come.

I don't think it's going to have a heavy emphasis on shooting, I'm sure a good majority of it will be exploration and puzzle solving from the looks of it.
I should clarify, I mean I'm really not a fan of the first person point of view. Or now that you mention it, puzzle games. But I'm still willing to give it a shot.

Wasn’t sure if I should necro this thread or make a new one but I check in on Scorn from time to time and they have recently released a new gameplay trailer:

They also have a recent-ish trailer here:

I love the atmosphere and Giger-esque look of the game, though I worry it might end up too empty with lots of stretches of nothing. I’m hopeful it will be something really interesting and cool though!

Bump The game is coming out tomorrow, let the disappointment begin!
Skill Up acted as though he liked it, but we'll see. I have the same concerns others have of there potentially not being enough to do. It looks like it'll be a disturbing spectacle, regardless.

I am loving it so far. I'm not worried about there not being enough to do, because I got to do what is there in the sickly gorgeous set-pieces they've made.

I think the last time I just lapped up the world like this was Morrowind (not that the games are comparable, they're not - they just scratched the same itch of weird for me).

And the soundtrack is fucking awesome. If you're into dark soundscapes and atmospheric black metal, it's done by Aethek & Lustmord.

Oh boy. The devs said this wouldn't be a combat-heavy game. Okay, I get that. That's fine. I don't think anyone was going into this expecting to hide behind cover and fire laser weapons. However, pretty much every single piece of video and shit they put out did show off the weapons and some of the enemies. So it does setup some expectations.

I am about 2 and a half hours into it.

The visuals are absolutely insanely gorgeous and so is the sound design. A+. Perfect 10. All that.

But the gameplay... The first 2 hours is nothing but doing very basic bitch puzzles, opening doors, getting keys, activating mechanisms, and figuring out where to go. That is it.

That is literally it.

No enemies.

No stealth.

You do get one weapon but it's pointless. You can use it to kill some hovering things that do nothing to you but that is it.

Finally over 2 hours in you finally get something more to do. You get enemies you fight or stealth it out. And this section is almost exactly like the Alpha demo they gave out to backers on Kickstarter. So that's yet another example of the devs trying to sell the game as a stealthy/survival horror game.

Keep in mind that the game is 5/6 hours long. So a 3rd of the game just makes you run around and do basic puzzles and hit switches without any threat of dying.

I'm going to keep playing because I'm finally at a point where you get to do something but man was this a wasted opportunity.

You're insane. The whole game should have been like the first level. No combat and most definitely not fucking stealth (wtf), just puzzles in a creepy alien environment (it's not a "walking simulator", it's called an adventure game. Ever heard of Myst, zoomers?).

Unfortunately, they did add combat and it blows. It's absolutely out of place in a game like this, I don't know what possessed them to put it in.

Still, it doesn't completely ruin the game, it's fun enough and I'm about halfway through, so I will probably finish it.

Combat sucks since you never know if enemy is going to hit you. Ammo is plenty if you're not a sped. It's an adventure game, from time to time a bit cruel like those old Space Quest titles.
From my perspective it looks like they put that shooting stuf in the trailer and didn't know how to remove it. It's not horrible, it's not good.
I would call it an art exhibition. Either you like it or not. I wish one day we will get another one.

Except the puzzles are super easy. The game isn't even Myst and you're a god damn goober.
