You know, I shit on staff a lot. As a collective, I find them to be spineless and generally incompetent. However, I do sometimes find myself questioning my harshness. After all, I know for a fact that many staffers are genuinely good, well-intentioned people who have been caught up in a web of shittiness that they didn't weave. Sometimes I consider softening my tone.

Then, I go to check O5 Command, I see that they're promoting new Admins, I see the name "ProcyonLotor" on the list of candidates, and I decide that I'm not being harsh enough.

Really? This is the guy they're giving the keys to? The guy who admits to doxing minors and trying to threaten their futures for Internet trolling? The guy known for being a dick to random people all the time for no reason? They looked at everything this guy has done over the years, and decided that he should have more power?

I'm stunned. This is one of the most baffling decisions I've ever personally seen them make. In a year that has been nothing but one terrible decision after another for them so far, this manages to stand out as the worst choice of all. The only question now is how exactly it's going to bite them in the ass later.

Conwell's a good candidate though.

It's almost as though they know how shitty of decisions they are making and are just twisting the knife in because they know damn well the only thing that can stop them -- the users -- won't. Staff have made them dumb, blind, and deaf by controlling information and expect them to stay the herded cattle and sheep that they want them to be. That staff let the users step in to do their dirty voting for them but then select their own admins... astounding.

On that note, I am doing some reading of the staff chat logs for a post and came across this. In light of the recent hot-button of staff being incredibly shitty people to one another behind closed doors, I thought it was a good time to share it.

Looks like staff have finally fucked up badly enough that they're going to be hit where it really hurts. Kaktus, as much as we shit on him here, is undeniably a boon for the wider SCP community. His articles are extremely popular and have well-structured narratives, so they're a big part of what keeps the offsite content engine running. If he calls it quits over Procyon's promotion, the effects will be felt in every part of the SCP community, not just the inner rings.

We're at a crossroads here. Either staff caves and walks back Procyon's promotion, or we're in for a wild ride. Either way, SCP staff are finding out that there's only so many retarded decisions you can make before it catches up with you.

Also the timing of this is hilarious to me: four days ago I sent a DM to Mann, feeling like an idiot for doing so, but I did it anyway. I told him that he should do the right thing that he knows he should have done a long time ago and ban AdminBright. That doing so would help heal some wounds between their obviously broken staff and the users. I told him that the trajectory of his role as the de facto Gears v2 of the site and the trajectory of remaining loyal to his shitty but long-time site chums are on a collision course. I asked him to read a critique of his and staff's decision making. He never replied, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he was too busy. But after reading this, I think he'll get the message without me.

The vote on Admin promotions appears to have stalled. Two of the active Admins have not yet voted, and Aismallard actually voted no on Procyon's promotion, so I think they've realized that promoting Procyon makes them look really bad and widens the gap between staff and users even further.

I think this might be the first time an election of an administrator hasn’t been unanimous acclimation, definitely the first since the modern election system was put into place. Wow. I’m stunned.

I have heard (although I can't find anything on O5 Command to actually support this) that Admin promotions require a unanimous vote to even go through, so Aismallard might have just killed Procyon's chances of being promoted. Even if that's not actually how it works, the lack of a vote from two extremely active Admins (Zyn and TSAT) who have to have seen the thread by now seems to indicate that something's going on in the background that we're not privy to.

Kaktus has decided that now's a good time to start publicly posting some of the things staff have been saying behind closed doors. So far, he's only posted one thing, which I have attached below. He's calling for a bunch of promotions and demotions, and I personally agree with his suggestions. The current power clique of staffers have demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are not capable of making the hard decisions that need to be made if the wiki is to avoid a mass exodus of talented people. The structures established during the era when TroyL was the closest thing the wiki had to a head Admin simply do not work anymore, and it's clear that getting rid of them will require the removal of many high-ranking staffers.

The problem with doing that is that what gets discussed in this thread can vary wildly depending on what's going on with the wiki. When the Procyon saga concludes, we might have nothing to talk about but the actual writing for a bit, and then we might go back to talking about the community if some drama flares up, and so on.

It's weird how the two main traits people associate with Kaktus (good writer, consistently awful presence in the community) have reversed since he went on hiatus for a bit due to writer's block. I think his 6kon entry is massively overrated (expect a post about that and some of the other entries when the contest ends), but he seems much more reasonable than he was prior to the break. I can live with this.

At this point I think Kaktus just needs to draw attention to it, positive or negative.

If anything, recent events have proven that the staff aren't stoic, mysterious figures but, well, people, with all the flaws that entails. They can crack under pressure, and while Bright is a fairly sensitive and weak example since it didn't even take 100 downvotes (or loss of votes) for him to ring up his political harem of SCP staff to delete DDD, it's still evidence nonetheless.

With that in mind, consider what a swarm of (mostly angry) people piling in the DM's of staff, on wikidot and otherwise, asking what's the deal with this Proc guy will do to them.

I can't recall who pointed it out first, but if a nobody with next to no presence on the wiki besides a few posts and comments managed to cause enough of a ruckus to get a decade-old article taken down, imagine what the authors and community can do to get things done. It's perfectly obvious the staff don't have as tight a grip on things as they thought.

I also can't believe nobody else thought it was kinda funny staff almost instantly deleted DDD when Bright asked, but won't concede to anyone else's requests.

How involved are the main site's staff involved with that, though? Do you think whoever runs that site simply didn't think it should've been preserved or did staff go the extra mile in scrubbing the article?
