I’ve noticed that the stressful scenarios involved with dangerous lines of work (Security, Enforcement, Emergency Etc) conditions people to build specific routines. Eventually people also tend to build a specific uniforms or perhaps even “kits” based around what best suits them.

I was wondering if there’s anybody here who has experience with this type of work? If so, what’s an item or article of clothing that might seem incidental, but is actually far from it? Especially with the juxtaposition of long inactivity and urgent, possibly life threatening situations.

Tourniquets seem extra, but knowing how to apply one makes a lot of difference.

Flashlights help. When using one, especially on a gun, turn it on long enough to aim, fire, shut it off, and move (when it’s safe) so enemies can’t track you. Leave a light on, or linger too long, and they’ll easily find you.

Speaking from experience?

Good kneepads (yeah yeah make your jokes) are pretty great to have. Sitting on your knees simply gives you the best range of motion if you need to mess around with something the ground, and doing that on concrete or gravel in normal pants fucking sucks. The big foam ones that go into leg pockets of carpenter type pants are especially nice since they protect you from a lot of shin banging too.

A pair of strong and sharp stainless steel scissors should be pretty useful for emergency stuff.
The one thing I hear most police officers harp about around there though is carrying naloxone for saving the lives of OD:ing druggies, since that's such a common occurrence in that line of work. They need that way more often than tourniquets.

always keep a weapon and pepperspray with you if possible. just dont walk around like a lunatic with it if you just need self-defense.
This is the most important thing, especially if you’re an unarmed guard. Doubly so if you’re working security in shitholes like Portland or Seattle. At the very least, carry Sabre pepper gel (not spray since you risk blowback) be discreet about it and don’t let your dispatch know you’re carrying it. Always assume any potential intruder is carrying a weapon of their own. You’ll most likely be fired for using the pepper gel if you’re in a state and working for a company run by soy guzzling faggots, but it’s a hell of a lot better than ending up dead.

Some other good tools would be a powerful flashlight with a high lumen count. Obviously good for third shift patrols but can also be used to blind someone or as a makeshift truncheon. I suggest this one, cheap and powerful.

A good steel thermos like this one and a pair of insulated comfortable boots like these will make your life much easier as well.

Used to be a security guard so if this is something you’re planning on going into, DM me if you want and I can help walk you through any questions.

Briefly wore large carpenter pants with added knee protection. It was very bulky and prefer to avoid giving off the impression of wearing pads. Could probably get away with it in the winter though and i’ll re-explore it then. I’m beginning to think the summer heat will start kicking my ass; combined with the minimal protection that heat appropriate clothing provides.

Naloxone isn’t a bad idea, drugs and homelessness is continuing to worsen.
I’m worried though, about being held liable for its use or possible misuse. It’s being bolstered as foolproof; and that makes me suspect it’s potential risks may have been ‘altruistically’ obfuscated. Haven’t researched personally though, and will look into it now that you mention.

The only issue with Naloxone is they are likely to take a swing at you when they come out of it. I'm not a doctor but if they are dying of respiratory failure due to opiate overdose and your Narcan them they will go into precipitated withdrawal aka "mega withdrawal" and become agitated beyond words in addition to having typical withdrawal issues. IIRC there was a nigger who was on a bus and narcan'ed back to life. The police told him he needed to go to the hospital when the Naloxone wears off he might die, conversation went on for 5 mins and finally in typical fashion they gave him an ultimatum of ambulance or police car and his response was to draw a concealed firearm and shoot them as apparently he was trafficking a large amount of fentanyl pressed pills on his person. That is an extreme example and he might have shot it out with them even if he had no drugs in his system. I had some loony cunt of an ex GF sue me for an ambulance ride. She downs a bunch of pills during an argument, I call 911 and they said "ambulance or 5150, you dumb cunt, which is it gonna be?". She actually sued me for $900 for trying to stop her from killing herself. Never showed up to court, case dismissed.

I do not care for aerosol based deterrents, some people they are effective on some they are not. I am a fan of the "spring loaded collapsible walking stick" aka totally not a baton. Small relatively light and concealable if you are walking your dog at night. Not legal in all areas but police are very ignorant of what is and is not legal if it's not a knife or a gun.
