What are some kiwi's takes on ss4?

I think it looks pretty slow to start, and then has bad performance for an action game because it is too busy proving that their engine can render out a whole open world rpg map.

Serious Sam has always been a franchise of the formula where you run down a hallway, end up in an open area, and kill a hundred or so enemies, over and over for a dozen or so hours. I only played the first 3 levels of SS4 so far, but my experience is that it was more of that. I think anyone who's never played it before might hate it, but having played Serious Sam games since I was rather young, I don't mind it and it was really fun to me, with enough change from SS2/3 to feel fresh and different, without changing enough to feel different or to where it might have felt like it forced another play style on you.

If you liked previous SS games, SS4 is fun, and if you've never played SS before, SS4 is kinda just a mass enemy slaughter simulator without much challenge or skill, and if that's not your thing, it probably won't be very fun for you.

Serious Sam is the video game equivalent of a B-movie, and never has been more than that, and that's what makes it good.

I have played just after the Vesuvius level, and so far it's fun. Some things that I like more than SS3 are that the game starts throwing you more enemies earlier, and there are very few hitscan enemies (SS3 could get annoying at times in the earlier levels, which often were tight corridors filled with zombie soldiers). I don't like that you can't reload while sprinting, for some reason you could do that in SS3 but not in SS4, and it makes using the assault rifle very risky. Speaking of which, it no longer has perfect accuracy and suffers from recoil, like in a realistic shooter. Weird.
To sum it up, I haven't played a lot yet but what I have played I've liked. Some fans of the old games hated SS3 and this one is very similar so if you're one of those, you won't like the new one. Personally I've enjoyed all the mainline Sam games, so I have no problems with it.

Okay so I got farther into the game and I unlocked the ability to reload (and shoot) while sprinting. I wish the reloading was available from the beginning but, it's better than nothing.

Serious Sam should've stayed with the cartoons style.

There ARE pretty extensive shader choices for the renderer, including a vibrant cartoon mode with that weird "rich color" technique they use on the switch and in fallout 4 where the colors are "deep" somehow

Its rare to see a FPS which doesn't take itself too seriously and attempt to adopt shitty COD mechanics and pander to E sports. That alone is worth at least trying SS.

Ahhh, Serious Sam. Easily one of my favorite FPS series, with it's massive enemy variety and hordes, powerful guns and absolutely fucking cringe one liners in 4. Seriously, the joke quality fucking DROPPED in 4, I actually wanted to murder several characters it got so bad (Looking at you, Rodriguez. Looking right into your god damn soul.).

-TFE was a great experience, nothing beats Dunes in terms of music and hordes for TFE. Yeah yeah the Ugh Zan fight exists but I feel Dunes is way more iconic.

-TSE was, and still is, the best in the series. Lots of locales, cool new enemy types and weapons (I love my sniper), lots of fun Sam dialogue, just *Chef kiss* yes. All the yes. The Citadel alone wins it for me.

-2 is an interesting case for me; It was actually the first game I saw in the series, and what got me into Sam in the first place. Yet whenever I play it, I just get overwhelmed by all the weird shit and odd dialogue. Still fun, but it drives me crazy sometimes.

-BFE was good. It was drab for the most part, and clearly had CoD on the mind, but it won out in the end with its reoriented focus and awesome final level. Still not a big fan of reloading though. Also, where the FUCK is the laser gun? And yes I am aware Jewel of the Nile exists, I beat it and I'm still salty about the missing laser gun.

-4 is strange for me. I was hyped as fuck for it, being a very active member in the Croteam discord and basically acting like the games #1 fan, but when it came out it was buggy as fuck, ran like crap and had dialogue that had me desiring murder suicide. The shooting was good, as were the enemies and hordes, but something about it just made me tired of it the first few missions in. The only reason I'm playing it now is because of...

-Siberian Mayhem is out, and from what I've seen it's the redemption of 4 on steroids. Dedicated fans and modders as devs? Check. Better enemy placement and fights? Check. New baddies and guns? Check. NOT cringe dialogue? Looks like it, gonna have to check this out.

-Next Encounter is also really good, I basically consider it the real SS2. Runs really well on an emulator, and there's even a mouse mod that works quite well. Not much to say on it, it's the good shit.

-Random Encounter is shite. I refuse to recall my experience with it.

-Bogus Detour was fun, is all I can say on it really.

-Double D XXL was like the coke addicted cousin of Metal Slug and Contra and I found it really fun. Some of the enemy designs are PEAK Sam. Great fun.

-The VR ports are good fun, but I kinda wish you could two hand some weapons. I wanna rack a shotgun in style, damnit! Also, 3 is shockingly better in VR, I don't know why but it just works. Kinda like how Doom 3 is just better in VR.

I seriously dig this game. Easily number 3 in my favorite FPS series, next to F.E.A.R and Doom.
