I've been wanting to get ink done for a couple years now. The first tattoo I want is an Asian style dragon going down my left arm. The symbolism of it goes with my Dad's service in Vietnam. I've spoken before how my Dad passed away in 2010 and this is kind of my way of having a memorial of him everywhere I go. In his possessions was a patch that was from Vietnam that was made for everyone in his boat crew that had an Oriental dragon on it. I remember him showing it to me when I was little and telling me his stories from the war.

So I want a dragon curling up my arm and above the head of the dragon a tattoo of the Vietnam service ribbon and JDA USN 1949-2010. There are others I want done, but I want this one first because if I decide that I never want to get another one I'll at least have this one. I will eventually follow up with one on my right arm of a blue and white cobra or rattlesnake.

Anyone else have ink?

I'm a Zelda fantard, so I have the eye of truth on me.
search

It's on the lower left half on my stomach. When people lie they tend to look down and to the right so if someone lies to my face their eyes will unknowingly be looking at the eye of truth, which reveals reality.
Workin on my second one now. It's gonna be a frog on a clock that reads 8:10, the frog is from the small town I went to college in, known as frog city there are frogs everywhere. Stores have hem painted on their signs and frog sculptures are All down Main Street. The symbol of my school was a clock tower, hence the clock. 8:10 in military time is 20:10. 2010 is the year I graduated.
My BF has huge respect for the Roman Empire, wih their political sysytem shaping ours and all, so he's got SPQR along his arm

Yakul from Princess Mononoke on the inside of my right arm:

I love the film and I always wanted my own red elk like Yakul growing up.

This one is mostly because my pets mean a lot to me.

I want to get one that resembles the Dark Tower series by Stephen King since that series helped get me through a tough time in my life. I also want to get a great horned owl in remembrance of my mother since she passed away when I was fifteen and she just adored owls. She had statues and photos of them all over the house, haha.

I probably have more tattoos than most of the people on this board. (My ink has been featured in many magazines, and my left arm is in a few top-ten lists.) I'll say this: think long and hard about getting the symbolism of another race/culture put on your body. You're obviously a very smart guy, so i will leave it to you to figure out the potential downsides to doing that. Other than that, it's sometimes hard to find an artist that will go big or visible on someone who has no prior ink. (depends on where you are). And for the love of god, go to a good artist. Do your homework for a long time before letting anyone touch you, and don't cheap out. There are no "bargains" in tattoos. "You get what you pay for" definitely applies. Most people (even those with a lot of work done) usually regret their first tattoo (i know i do.) so if you're going big, be 100% sure. Also do NOT just pick something off of the wall. That's called "Flash" and it's an embarrassment. Think about it... you're out having a good time and someone notices your tattoo peeking out and asks to see it. you roll up your sleeve and they say "NO WAY" and roll up theirs. you have the exact same tattoo. lame.

One trick i've found that helps people is to get your design, and then tack it up on your wall someplace where you'll see it every single day. If after a year or so you're still looking at it going "man that is so awesome" or otherwise not totally sick of looking at it, then get it done.

All those warnings aside (and really, Dude, i only throw those out to people i kinda like) go for it. If you have questions about it hit me up.

No one is ever able to guess what my tattoo is.

I getting one on my 18th in January on my wrist. It's really cliche though. Even the location is cliche

I fucking love it but the reaction I get from people when showing it is " that's so overly patriotic"

It also a pretty cliche tattoo but I like it. According to tattooed friends, the crown will have to be approx 1.5x the size when scaled to my wrist to make sure it doesn't blotch.

I want a better "piece" later on rather than just that one little one, but I can't decide what. It's probably gonna be black sabbath related because I love them (I was toying with the idea of getting the "ozzy" knuckles, before realising it's quite faggy for me to copy like that  ). Lim really not keen on text-only tattoos otherwise I'd get lyrics on me (there's one song by ozzy osbourne that just fucking... Makes my mind go into a peak of euphoria, called "Time". It's got a really solid chorus that I was considering having a tattoo of but I just didn't know how to convert it into something good).

I've considered getting ozzys cross pendant tattooed onto me. However I'm not religious, ozzy is, and I don't want to explain a million times why I've got a cross on me.

In a completely different area of music, I've often thought about getting a Beatles related tattoo because I'm a Beatles fag. But other fags have ruined it man. I can't get the logo, over done. Can't get their names, over done. I could get like bobblehead cartoon versions of them like the old Saturday morning cartoon, but it's probably been done. I can't just get a million generic tattoos .

I may get the logo in the back of this album cover (the shifty man with the stolen tapes):

I'm also a huuge Macca fan, and I dunno that seems like a pretty cool design. I'd have to consider size and location tho, I've not given it a lot of thought.

I'm thinking of getting the Lannister lion on my bicep. My family had a lion as it's crest centuries ago, so it's not pure fanboy making me do it.

Up until April or so, I had a modest amount of tattoos, but then I got a job at a tattoo shop (doing of all things, IT and web design,) so now I'm working on a sleeve. As of late, a lot of my tattoos are video game related - Okami/Okamiden (half-sleeve,) Gears of War (leg) and Bioshock's Chains that Bind. Eventually, there will be moogles because FUCK YEAH MOOGLES. My sleeve is intended to be Asian-themed (with my "Las Vegas Mistake" stuck in there,) - Okami/Okamiden, the koi already on my upper arm and a big lucky cat, (colored like my cat, who passed away last month.) I'll never be in any tattoo magazines, but my ink is special to me and everything has meaning to me.

But yeah, somejerk gave awesome advice. Research your artists - definitely ask to see portfolios, (an excellent artist generally will have no problem showing you his/her portfolio.) Some artists may be awesome at traditional or nautical, but only so-so at Japanese/Chinese. The good ones will admit to their strengths and weaknesses. Also take some time, if you can, to talk a little with your potential artist and get a feel for their personality, how they view their job and how interested they are in the piece you're considering. If you're telling an artist about the design you want and they seem uninterested or are just like "Yeah, I can do that," I'd steer clear. Personally, I prefer an artist who's excited about the piece and offers to tweak it to make it more customized for you.

At the shop I work at, I originally started getting my sleeve done by one of the artists I'd befriended who talked a good game, but ultimately wound up doing some pretty sub-par work, and because he was my friend, I kept giving him the benefit of the doubt, especially after seeing his previous work. Eventually, it seemed like he was losing interest in the piece and wound up doing a really shit job and ultimately got fired after multiple clients started coming in complaining about his work. I wound up asking another artist, (who's now one of my really good friends,) if she'd be willing to "fix" my arm and she jumped on it - throughout the process with the first artist, she was interjecting little ideas and suggestions that I was totally vibing on, but never came to fruition with artist 1. Unfortunately, my current artist has "a LOT of work to do" but she and I are super stoked now that we can incorporate her ideas into the piece.

OT: somejerk, I'd love to see your work!

Well, i'm pretty hesitant to post any kind of identifying info on any of the forums i visit (especially one full of people who have repeatedly RAPED Chris.) which is why i'll probably never post in the pics thread, despite the fact that i am just... so ridiculously attractive. *SIGH*

Tell you what though... Do a google image search for "Brandon Bond tattoos" and i promise you that you'll be staring right at some of my ink somewhere in the first 100 images or so ;)

I also want to add one thing to what mortal_wombat said about getting to know your artist a little before getting work done: If you're getting a sleeve or a large tattoo, consider that you're going to be sitting in very close proximity to this person for several hours on more than one occasion. and they will be pretty much right in your face, breathing on you, talking to you, and touching you. Make sure that this is someone you're not going to want to punch in the face after 20 minutes.

somejerk - your artist is ridiculous. A fair number of mine are in desperate need of fixing because they're ... not good and after seeing what your artist does, I'm embarrassed to even consider showing anything I've got done. Except for two of them, I guess.

Dude, also, not to freak you out, but you may want to inquire about a skin test when choosing colors (if you want your piece to have color,) because some people react to yellows/oranges/reds. It's a small number of people who have allergic reactions, but it's still worth mentioning. The one I've got on my leg is (supposed to be) Intenze Bright Red, however, I found out the hard way that I'm mildly allergic to that color. It was done by the same "artist" I mentioned earlier and he didn't do it right, so now I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get it fixed, because it's itchy and textured.
