So, you just downloaded a questionable file but you still have to open it, a VM is a great start point but still wich software to use? For media in general music/videos I use VLC and for documents in general I use Okular or LibreOffice, which softwares do you use?

If you are worried about what you download, then learn disassembly and then learn to use the various tools that well give you a clue about the file you are looking at.
