It’s also puzzling how Sony came in at the same time with Playstation Move, an even more shameless Wii knockoff, which also tanked, then brought it back for the PS4 as part of PSVR, and no one ever mentions any of this. As always, it’s okay when Sony does it.

At least Kinect tried to do something new. PS Move was just a Wiimote with a plastic ball strapped to it.
The wii was a knock-off of the PS2 eye-toy. The move was brought back as a clever way to to clear the shelves of unsold moves, while answer the question of how to track hand movements. It was a rare bit of genius on Sony's end, probably because the idea came from Cerny.

The kinect was shit and Microsofts shift away from traditional (hardcore) gamers to the casuals is what killed the division. It started in 2010 and I wish I could dig up my old posts from then when I said time and time again that Kinect would kill the brand, only to be shot down by xbox shills saying it's the greatest thing ever. Even their E3 went gay as fuck with the cringeworthy star wars video and "fist bump" from the dad and daughter, who were two different colours.

Since 2020, Sony has copied Microsoft circa 2010 in their formula of how to completely fuck up a successful brand.

It never comes up because Sony never bet the entire farm on Move. Move was a one-off gimmick with some neat games but never pushed and then quietly retired.

Microsoft went so all-in on kinect that it was impossible to buy an Xbox One during the launch year that didn't come with one, which raised the price and also meant that some of the hardware budget had to come out of the console (resulting in a weaker system than the PS4).

PSVR was actually a good move though. It wasn't forcibly bundled and it was actually one of the most accessible VR platforms for a while and had some pretty interesting stuff going on. Sadly, they followed it up with the PSVR2 which was monumentally more expensive and also not compatible (????) with original PSVR games.

Gimmicks rarely sink companies unless they go all in on them. Sony is usually smart enough to not do so whereas Microsoft has yet to meet a gimmick it wasn't willing to burn the GDP of a small nation chasing.

Microsoft effectively killed off Rare, Lionhead and some of their smaller studios for Kinect. Which again they had a solid staple of bro gamers. Stupid move.

I still think that the Xbox One could have been salvageable if Halo 4 was a launch title... and a new IP. But that shit didn't happen either. Sony wasnt doing a ton, but they weren't being stupid like MS was.

Since the kinect dropped in price immediately it became the go-to solution for diy 3D scanners and mo-cap cameras.
They really should have just sold it as an enthusiast developer tool for those purposes.

Remember the big reason that Kinect was pushed is because the US government and NSA were funding Microsoft to get these spy devices in every home around the world to legally spy on americans and foreigners by circumventing governmental laws and relying on consumer and corporate laws instead.

While “stop producing exclusives that people are actually interested in” is a commonality, not much else comes to mind. What else is Sony doing to shoot themselves in the foot that mirrors Microsoft’s failures with the Xbox?

Fixed that for you

Now we have the good ol’ smartphone for that plus all the other “smart” devices that are in people’s homes.

Ignoring their core audience to chase a new, fickle audience.
Casualising IP's which in modern day is wokifying them
Lying about sales numbers using sold-in vs sold-through to mask a problem
focusing on online games ( Ftp, GaaS) instead of single player.
Moving towards third party and abandoning first party.
Sitting on their arse thinking they've won by default.
PSN+ having levels and price hikes.
Increasingly expensive hardware.
Multiple SKUs for no reason (Discless PS5 is copying the core xbox360 and X1).
Refusing to accept the current direction is wrong, doubling down and telling their customers that they are wrong.

Didn't PS5 supposedlty beat Switch 2 in terms of black friday sales because of that Fortnite bundle though, surely that'd be a bright spot in thier recent sales figures?
I think it was last week or the week before the PS5 just outsold the Switch 2 (ignoring the combined numbers of Switch 1 pissed all over it) so the Sony fans were saying Sony were dominating Japan.

Even that 'japan only' PS5 with a slight price reduction has sold like pulled-pork at a Hannukah festival.

Yeah, but i mean byond Japan, where they were boasting that they were getting more PS5s out than Switch 2s in the US and UK durring the Black Friday period which people took as a bad sign for the latter (mainly youtubers) because the grift must continue

The UK has always been a Sony stronghold. If they lose that to Nintendo then they're toast.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Sony are going to jack the prices up again and wait for an excuse to drop them just before GTA6 launches.

The big asterisk there is that for November as a whole, the switch 2 utterly trounced the ps5 in terms of sales. Whaddya know, when you put out a gigantic discount, people wait until the discount to buy it, so ps5 ended up getting most of its sales for the entire month in just one single weekend, while switch 2 sales were far more steady.

I have come from the TGA's to tell you for Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei:
7 NOMINATIONS
0 WINS
TOTAL SNOY DEFEAT

Capcom is actually burning bridges with sony, fucking hell. Granted, while I don't really buy their narrative blaming ps5 solely for monster hunter wilds catastrophic drop off, the game is absolutely shitass in a dozen different ways, they're at least correct that it didn't remotely help things. Monster hunter world hit 10 million sales prior to the pc launch, and I think I'm being generous in suggesting that the maximum amount sold on xbox one was probably about 2 million. Wilds is still under 3 million on ps5 despite ps4 and ps5 being at similar sales numbers for world and wilds releases, if anything, ps5 had the advantage. 8+ million sold on ps4 in ~6 months to <3 million on ps5 in around 8 months.

I will be impressed if they make physical copies. The trend for this and last year has been to dual release on PS4/5 but only PS5 is pressed onto discs, while PS4s remain digital, except in Japan where they still release as usual.
