I don't think the PS5 is selling poorly, it will probably meet or exceed the PS4's total, depending on how long it remains in production. The problem is software sales, especially in Japan.
Too bad for Sony that platform owners mainly make their money from software sales, not hardware sales.

Sure, the difference is fuzzier now because everyone has a mobile phone, but handhelds were always a separate beast to home consoles, just as consoles and PC are different.
Not really. The only real difference between portable consoles and home consoles was relative power and internal architecture. The Switch has no real fundamental differences between it and any other x86 console at this point. The need for a separate portable console market has largely evaporated as technology has improved.

Weren’t OR/AS both Emerald remakes like how HG/SS were both Crystal remakes?
Nope, the story more or less follows the original version of each game instead of Emerald, so you only get Groudon or Kyogre, but not both in the game, and you only fight Team Magma or Aqua, instead of both. There's an "Episode Delta" with some Emerald-based content where you can get Rayquaza and Deoxys.

Considering the father is always absent in Pokémon games, I’m surprised the protagonist isn’t black.
I think the father is typically missing because of the salaryman stereotype, so he's too busy working to see his family.

Its a small fraction of weekly sales despite costing less money and that held true even before the OLED's release. Furthermore, given that the OLED, itself, has failed to become the dominant version its pretty obvious that while most people use it as a hybrid there is a massive quantity that don't care about screen quality but do care about having full tv access. The Lite is a shit product for nobody that was only forced upon us to shut Gamefreak up. And it can't even fit in your pocket.
It could be a bit more complicated than that. There could be other reasons Lite didn't sell as much, one you pointed out yourself about its size. As for OLED, it's more expensive so that could explain it not catching on as much. I do think the hybrid nature is a draw for people but there's other considerations too.

Supposedly your mother is in LGP/LGE, regardless of your chosen race (I haven't played it and now never will).

The PS2 was super expensive when it came out - I don't remember how much exactly but I remember my older brother being told no on account of the price. We had a dvd player relatively soon after those became a thing and my parents certainly wouldn't have spent 500 Muttbux on one. Still wild that the price varied that much across the pond.
I had 600,- DM in my head as price on release in Germany, it arrived shortly before everything switched completly over to yurodollars. That was a shitload of money, 100,- DM more expensive than the Dreamcast. Just googled and found this ad:

Seems i was off by 200,- DM, 800,- DM is utterly ridiculous for a gaming console, yanks don't know how good they had it with consumer electronics prices back then, compared to almost the whole rest of the world. I need to add that Karstadt massivly overprices their shit and would've long died without government subsidies so games cost 20-30,- DM more there than anywhere else, which makes me think the PS2 cost 700-750,- DM at other retailers. Still an absurd amount of money, think like a Neo Geo AES on release in the US.
The "People got it as a cheap DVD player" thing only really started after massive price cuts, i think it went down to 500,- DM already in its first year.

Yeah, on gaming forums.

It will never stop amazing me how so many people here seem to have no idea just how little gaming forum/hardcore gamer reactions and opinions are shared by the gaming population at large.

The *vast* majority of people who bought a PS4 or an Xbox one have absolutely no fucking clue about the always online DRM shit that came up for a month in June 2013. The vast amount of people who play games don't pay attention to game journalism to even be aware of any of that shit. They pay attention to game advertising.

We're talking about a feature that the Xbox One DIDN'T EVEN HAVE, and people are acting like the mere mention of it at E3 was enough to allow the PS4 to dominate at the start and hold that position.

That's fucking retarded. It was the fact the PS4 was less expensive while having marginally better performance that pushed consumers to pick it over the Xbox One at launch. It was the fact nobody wanted the Kinect, let alone less performance and a higher price for it.

Yes, consumers were too stupid to even know the XBox One's DRM "solution" existed but were extremely knowledgeable about the power differential between it and the PS4.

I've been posting in this thread since before the Switch was even out and have repeated my views on the shitty, shit, shit Switch Lite many many times. Its way too big/the wrong shape and should have had a tv port (it costs less than two dollars to have a tv out, I don't even need an HDMI cable or dog-head equivalent included, they can buy that all separately as add-ons.) This really came back to hurt consumers a year and a half later when Covid+Animal Crossing happened and a bunch of people got stuck buying Lites just to have anything to play on even though they did actively want the tv play feature. Remember that time everyone? That time that the global pandemic skewed sales off the Lite which should have, by all means, actually been an even lower portion of total Switch sales? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

MS refused to say anything about it, which is just as damning as if they confirmed it. Mattrick could have dispelled the rumor in five seconds by just saying 'Of course we won't require a Internet connection.'

And, I can't believe I'm saying this, you're underestimating normies. The ones I associated with thought that they wouldn't be able to go to Gamestop to save $5 on their Call of Duty or Madden anymore.

For a "Lite" those are certainly issues, but the regular Switch is the most painful console I've ever held. Something about its design cramped my fingers so badly it hurt, so it's at least an improvement. I also think Lite deserves praise for having an actual d-pad (despite still not being very good).

I'd like a lighter, smaller, more ergonomic version with an OLED screen but Nintendo is being uncharacteristically reluctant to release revisions.

Opinions aren't always shared but interactions exist. My normie friends aren't going to listen to me if I tell them kawaii animu girl JRPG gets really good 30 hours in. But when I tell them they new Saints Row is gay woke shit they avoid it. They dont need to know everything because they aren't that invested anyway

I'm still pissed they did Ruby & Sapphire remakes but not a proper Emerald remake. Emerald was always my favorite, especially because that was like the one generation where your dad is actually in the game.
Had a friend of mine get an anbernic handheld emulator set up for me, so if nothing else I can play most of the GBA games I had as a kid. From what I understand at least one of the emulator box makers is working on trade functionality if you’re feeling realy nostalgic.

Which is the best handheld emulator would you recommend just out of curiosity?

Nah, I miss it. I remember happy times with my family and how janky the whole thing was. Sadly my 360 assploded multiple times from overheating.
I can get behind that. I had fun with the Kinect, but my ultimate opinion on the thing is that it's a really cool piece of technology I don't think we can ever have a good, proper version of. The infrared motion detecting camera was way too low resolution, and not rapid enough to capture motion data at any rate that wasn't completely sluggish, so nothing but those janky full-body dance games where you just match poses at intervals ever worked well. And of course, having a camera on top of your TV always watching you leads to some serious privacy concerns, especially in an era where even normies are putting stickers over their laptop cameras. We could probably solve the technical side of things nowadays, with some seriously expensive, large, dense IR cameras, but the privacy issue can only be solved by the whole world becoming utopian.

The tech had a lot more potential than to just be a fad toy, and to this day it's still kind of a thing with Microsoft having Azure Kinect still available with a brochure site that more or less says "We don't know what to do with this, maybe you can figure something out".

Remember that one scene in one of the E3 announcements where Peter Molyneux is talking about some game where there was a kid talking to the player, who was a lady in front of her TV, and she even pulls a slick move where she draws something and hands the kid the paper by sliding it in front of the Kinect for a second and then quickly putting it down?

Yeah, all of that is certainly possible today, right down to the kid being a ChatGPT bot, but who the fuck wants to talk to a weird AI kid that's scanning absolutely every single input going into that creepy camera? It might be fun to mess around with for a few minutes in somewhere that's not my home, but everything about this was just doomed from the start once it hit the real world. 13 years ago, that's what they depicted the immediate future of games would be. Now it's just Spiderman telling you you're less than worthless unless you're a White Christian Male with all kinds of signs that say White Pride World Wide all over Spiderman Land and then he curbstomps a Black woman and gets Miles Merales arrested just for being Black, or something like that.
