Not ready Sony specific but this was the closest thing to a general vidya grievance thread I could find.

Why does water look so fuck awful in modern game? Final Fantasy X and Super Mario Sunshine had absolutely gorgeous water effects and those games were made on potato consoles less powerful than modern day phones.

Because they were stylized and hardware at the time could render true reflections without shitting themselves. Modern games instead of doing any stylization do real water simulation, as in approximating light absorption and scattering and all that stupiditiy, and then modern engines aren't capable of doing true reflections because of the cost of rendering geometry and shading pixels going way up now with super high poly meshes and advanced PBR shading, so they need to use screen space reflections which are cheap as shit and never made for large mirror reflections, but they do it anyway. At the very least they could use cubemaps but those are "outdated" and they'd rather do raytracing before thinking about optimization or stylization.

6th gen games, outside of the low poly count and blurry textures, still hold up through sheer artstyle. There is grit and texture that is impossible to capture again with high resolution textures or fancy PBR, because you go from each texture being painted in large strokes to represent how something looks, into becoming how that thing looks directly, and then more and more is reliant upon the lighting model and shading and all the other PBR stuff, which makes the complexity to create similar looking scenes increase exponentially. There is no grit in games anymore, everything looks too clean.

It's amazing how quickly Sony went to shit when they moved their HQ there.
As I keep repeating in this thread - Sony was shit before they moved their HQ there. The entire first half of the PS3 generation being fucked up is entirely due to the SCE (the original Japan branch) fucking up. Nothing is going to change from Sony moving things back there.

I don't know why this thread has such a hard-on for SCE. PlayStation has always lived and died by its third-party exclusives and the inability to court exclusives isn't going to magically get fixed just because there are nips in charge instead of burgers. Especially nowadays when Japanese game development is so focused on low-spec hardware like the switch, mobile, and steam deck.

Playstation, as it exists now, is a dead-end. Unless they meaningfully unseat the Switch and handheld PC space, they're not going to improve their fortunes next gen. Most especially since the next generation of kids don't even like consoles - they grew up watching surrogate e-daddys playing PC games and they want PCs. Consoles themselves are for oldtroon millennials.

Glad we got some clarity :story:

That's too professional. It lets you play five minutes like a nanny, then physically powers down your console.
Please tell me you're joking. It's depressing that given modern Sony, I can't actually tell for sure.

you don't own GOG games either. even your physical game just means you own the MEDIA WITH A LICENSE, not the game. I wish people would understand the difference.
That's their stated claim, yes. Let them come and enforce it. If I have the physical media, I fucking own it. Possession being 9/10ths of the law and all that.

The difference between physical media and digital media (in their eyes) is that they had to manufacture something to sell a physical copy. The difference (in my eyes) is they can only enforce their fuckery with digital media.

Man the last time I can remember seeing beautiful water in a PC game is modded Skyrim. Even vanilla Skyrim did okay, but god damn some of the water rework mods just brought it to life like nothing else (arguably because many of them steered away from pure "authentic looks" into more vibrant, slightly cartoony style).

SCE = the good era
SIE = the shit era

easy as

Fun fact, DRM on Steam is entirely up to the publisher’s discretion, and many games are DRM-free as a result. People like to ignore this when crying about muh 0.00000001% chance that Steam will take away muh games for some reason.

oh god, i was scared of getting

taken away from me....

Anyways, about that quote. I do think that quote is pretty good, but I think there's a bit more to it than "make games cheaper for russians and shieeeet"
I pirate my games not just because i'm broke as shit, but because my downloads are sometimes faster pirating than downloading officially.
Steam works well because you got some sort of attachment to buying from Steam. The little things like Steam Workshop, cards, seamless online play, Steam Communities, Steam Points, avatars and fast downloads all make it at least somewhat worthwhile to buy from Steam compared to anywhere else. This is something that Epic or whoever else will never understand. I have a soft spot for GOG since they're more of a specialty store and most people buying from them don't really care for that, but there's a reason why Steam is the most popular.
They still got too arrogant and made a difficult console no one could afford. Not saying that the SCE era wasn't better but do not think that they were perfect. The SCE era died because their arrogance costed them the 7th Generation.
So, no matter which studio, Playstation will always be plagued with no games?

They went into the 7th gen like they went into the 6th gen - with an absurdly difficult console to develop for and no real help for the developers to capitalize on it. This had been a problem for the PS2 but the PS2 was also cheap, widely adopted, and the games were standard-def so the dev costs were manageable.

The PS3 was the opposite of all that so when they plopped that monstrosity onto the market, not only did no one buy one, but studios looked at the difficulty and cost of developing for it and noped out. AFAIK it was the SCEA and SCEE (American and European) studios that wrote a ton of the middleware that eventually made it into dev kits which then salvaged the PS3 as a feasible development target for Japanese studios. Westoids are what made the PS3 and, as a result, they got put in control of the brand once the PS3 made a comeback (Xbox shitting the bed with kinect also helped). There's a reason why Mark Cerny gets to talk about the Playstation technical specs while Ken Kutaragi lives in the cuckshed.

I can't wait for the haters to go full contrarian to "own" DSP.
"he is so wrong lmao, paying to access the online services is based. He's poor".

This is more of a "modern" games industry problem than a Sony problem. Every game has to have nose hair-rendering graphics in order to justify the console upgrade. Problem is that to make such games take a ton of money and time to make. They are so prohibitive to make in bulk that it becomes nearly impossible to keep them exclusive (unless the console sells gangbusters from the start and does not lose momentum) and in turn that means fewer and fewer will want to buy the console.

MS and Sony are in a death spiral from a console manufacturer's standpoint. Their games are too expensive to keep them exclusive to underperforming systems and the consoles cannot perform without exclusives. The easy way to fix this would be to make cheaper, faster to make, stylised games that do not need top graphics to render. They will not do this because that would defeat the reason to upgrade. Another, far harder, solution would be to fire at all cylinders. Tell every studio to start making games. Hell, use money to create more studios. Hire more people. Expensive as fuck but it the only other way to fix this. They will not do this either because they are filled with talentless DEI hires that either chased away the good devs or frightened them into silence. So yeah, effectively a death spiral.

They considered victory to be their birthright. A formality. They never really recovered. The graphics creep (graphics so good no one would care for better ones) was always going to catch up to them and they did nothing. DEI was merely an accelerant at this point since they did not address the graphics creep. DEI did still help kill them but only earlier. Perhaps they would have turned it around in time had the woke crap not hastened their fall but that is merely speculation.
