I'm curious how backwards compatibility on the handheld will actually pan out.
I'm guessing PS5 games will only work if they implement the "power saver" mode that was recently added. Currently a whopping six fucking games support this feature, all of them first- or second-party.
For PS4, I wonder if they'll have to run games in base PS4 mode rather than PS4 Pro mode. That wouldn't be pretty.
If all PS6 games are required to support it by default, then it'll eventually have a library, but that could take quite a while.

There's definitely demand for this, as millions of people bought the PS Portal for some godforsaken reason. But I can't see Sony not fumbling it really hard like they always do.

What is the point of a PS6 portable? Play your digital PlayStation games on the go like a Steam Deck? Didn't the PS Portal fail due to it requiring a PS5?

Bored thoughts…

Now that Mario & Sonic have both been proven as successes on the big screen, do you guys think Sony might ever try another crack at using their children’s IPs for animated films?
There is money to be made, so I'm going to assume that people are already toying with that idea behind the scenes. But realistic what can they really do ? Most if not all of Sony's kid friendly franchises are dead and buried (e.g. Sly, Crash, Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Dexter) or too meaningless to be brought onto the big screen ( Knack). Only thing that is somewhat successful and contemporary is Astro Bot. And considering that we had a Last of Us, Twisted Metal and upcoming God of War TV show my bet would be that they try to go for the adult audience with something.

Surprisingly the Portal did way better than Sony originally expected, it seems to be selling consistently even months after release and Sony has added additional functionality to the device with software updates. It can now stream games from the PS5 even if you are away from home and if you have a PS Plus Premium subscription you can play games via streaming directly from the service without a PS5 as a in-between device. Of course being a streaming only handheld still limits it functionality since it needs a constant WIFI connection to work.

I guess Sony being the eternal trend chaser decided they didn't want to be the odd one out of the handheld arms race every other hardware manufacturer is engaged in. Considering how many people are more than happy to sacrifice performance for portability, it is not out of the question there is an audience for a dedicated Playstation portable that can actually play games locally and is cheaper than PS6 console while also playing the same games, the value proposition is there for a lot of costumers.

Sony, unlike Valve, has the manufacturing capacity to produce these units in bulk and has a retail presence. "PlayStation" as a brand has decades of recognition in the general public's mind share. Anyone seeing a "PlayStation" handheld again in store shelves is going to bring back memories for a lot of people who grew up with the PSP. If Sony has any brains it'll make the PS6 handheld's design as close to the PSP in aesthetics as possible, if it is just a hundred or so dollars more than a Switch 2 while being also backwards compatible with PS4/PS5 right out of the gate and having way better looking and performing versions of current third party titles than the Switch 2, it'll fly off the shelves.

The response for Fox in the Mario Galaxy Movie really makes me wish they would give Ratchet & Clank a second chance, with hopefully a better script. Ratchet’s got that similar cute cool guy appeal that I think audiences would be more susceptible to nowadays then 2016.

Sly is another one that just seems to begging for the film treatment. The Bad Guys was practically a spiritual Sly film. The current Spider-Verse animation trend Sony pioneered would also work wonders with the brand, giving it that perfect comic look.

Edit: Would also throw in Jak & Daxter, but that one is allegedly already in development with Tom Holland as Jak and Chris Pratt as Daxter. It will be a live action film, which, why?

No, Sony burned that bridge. As others have mentioned, they killed their legacy platforming mascot franchises. The only one that remains is Ratchet and Clank and the one time in 2016 they made a movie it was so bad and bombed so hard that it killed any idea of a future adaptation.

The Sly Cooper movie was strangled in the cradle after the Ratchet and Clank's failure. The Jak and Daxter movie was in "early development" in 2023, it is safe to say that after 3 years of silence the project is going nowhere. Even fucking Sega, which isn't even in the hardware space anymore knew to keep the Sonic franchise alive and have reaped the rewards tenfold with the Sonic movies.

They killed Twisted Metal, yet a now two season TV show exists with seemingly no game on the horizon to make any sense of it. All we have are rumors that one might have been in development. The R&C movie was created years after they killed R&C and lost Insomniac to being an independent developer. All this to say, Sony genuinely makes no sense, so I wouldn't put dead IP as reasoning why they wouldn't try it.

More likely, Sony just doesn't do it to try and act like they are some super adult company that makes real art for real men, like @I Know 孤独のせい stated. It is blatantly stupid of them to not hit while the trend is hot, especially for a notorious trend chaser, but that is Sony for you.

Ratchet & Clank came way too early for its own good. Not only did it get in before the vidya movie trend, but it also came before 00s nostalgia could really help it. The script being terrible and trend chasing, along with animation being from some poor Canadian studio didn't help. I think a retry could do it wonders. Give it that graphical fidelity of the PS5 title and either commit to PS2 era edge, or, more likely, the Last Lombax era and make it a more of a Pixar level adventure film. 2016 tried too hard to be a generic kids film and failed for it.

That was a pretty bold way to describe Rainmaker (formerly Mainframe Entertainment and now currently Mainframe Studios), Given they had some prestigous tv shows under thier belt (Mainly just ReBoot and thier pair of Transformers shows, and some minor licenced show hits in the 2000s) so they wern't some no-name studio.

...But at the same time... that WAS the 2010s when they were bought by the *ahem* "Rainmaker Income Fund", which was what the inital rebrand was from, and were coasting off making Barbie content, so they could definitely seen as a shell of a former selves (which was more obvious when ReBoot: The Guardian Code was inflicted onto the public). The aformentioned prestiege factor was probably why Sony chose them to make the R&C movie in the first place, even more so when thier own animation studio was stuck with making and consequently seen as a joke the moment they announced the Emoji Movie before the Spiderverse Movies came along.

Twisted Metal has always had a very dark and edgy backstory so Sony could leverage it in preference over its more "kid friendly" properties. As you said, they are trying to be in the "serious, grown up club", for them to pivot and try to chase the children's animation demographic only because Nintendo is doing it is just not going to work because Sony neglected its legacy mascot franchises.

I think a retry could do it wonders.

Mario and Sonic are extremely recognizable generational characters that have had games and all sort of media presence for decades: TV shows, comics, merchandise, toys, anime, Happy Meals, cereal and food products. Sony's properties like Ratchet & Clank, Sly and Jak and Daxter are good as games but as properties are unrecognizable outside of their own medium, especially Sly and J&D which haven't had any new games in well over a decade.

Hollywood now more than ever wants assured ticket sales on brand recognition alone. The original Ratchet & Clank movie cost $20 million to make which compared to today's production budgets is peanuts and it still lost money. The franchise has the stench of failure attached to it and a decade after release it isn't long enough for Hollywood to overlook the smell.

It took Mario three decades before getting a retry on the big screen despite being one of the most successful and persistent game franchises in existence. Sony by comparison now has nothing to offer for a young audience, they dropped the ball and the audience moved on.

As someone who only plays "older" games through free emulation and piracy it boggles my mind that anyone would waste $900 on a console where you can't even own a copy of your games anymore?

Is current year gayming really that awesome or something?

Agreed and same.

His time of influence has almost run out. His time in gaming will soon run out too. I think it will largely depend on how big a flop Intergalactic is but considering no one likes the characters/story/anything else about it and there is no nostalgia for it, it will be a massive failure.

I hope so.. i really do.

I am willing to bet that the crowd was paid to be there. No way you throw some women in gaming icons and try to pretentiously declare that this is not how to design a woman.

You would be surprised.. even back then. sadly

Most Metroid fans thought Zero Suit Samus was cringey back then. As a matter of fact, many still do!

Cringe? How so? Even compared to a bikini?

Fans or "fans".. because i know a lot of people on social media and the major gaming subs, infested with reddit's mainstream political ghouls, sure didn't. Along with so-called modern gaming media. I also note that ZSS is a reoccurring favorite, in and outside dedicated Metroid games. (i.e. appearances in other games) Outside gaming as well. Art etc.

The only legitimate complaint, by fans, was the added complexity from being so.. "dialogue heavy" in the first place. High personal drama is not what Metroid is about, many found it off-putting. The fact that she wasn't portrayed as a confidant experienced person in this prequel, was enough of a wedge to allow polititards and JW types to freely reee as hard as they did for lack of the total girl-boss type of character they demanded. And sound legitimate.

To make Vitas that much more appealing.

soyny (west) might actually support the thing this time since they've been able to policy purge all the "problematic" niche and ecchi games from their platforms. (I BIG reason why soyny west/US did just about everything in their power to tank the past handhelds in the west)

The time is right to revive the Sly movie, Sony. Look at how many people thirst post about Zootopia and The Bad Guys and Fox in the Mario movie. You can get in on that action, Sly would KILL with that audience. You just have to not completely fuck up the cast and script.

Having a cool easter egg that most fans will never see in a regular playthrough is a lot better than having it be the last 20 percent of the game for everyone. Imagine if you ended Halo 3 by having Chief's clothes blasted off and he was running around in his underwear.

edit: And then did the same fucking thing in every single game released after it.
Samus' entire hook is that she is a bounty hunter that looks like a robot, but she's also super fit and athletic because she was infused with churro DNA or something. It is superhero-esque stuff. Having her in the zero suit is the big twist for newcomers and an expected beat for returning fans, just like the last world of any Mario game being Bowser's domain, culminating in Mario going into the biggest castle to fight Bowser once and for all.

They are Nintendo games. They always have the same framework from game to game.

Druckman's games are barely games and he probably made crazy bank off of Blackrock & co. for pushing the "ugly women = good" narrative onto an industry full of insecure nerds that don't understand women at all. Gee, I wonder why gachas where you collect pretty anime girls took off so hard.

We're talking about Zero Mission, right? That sounds like an Other M complaint to me.

Yeah. The problem is that the ZS stuff really only became super nontroversial and an "issue" later in the M era. In the building era of SJ wankery. Now it is true that the graphics change (3D) meant that a lot more normies, bandwagon jumpers and ideologues were exposed to it. That is only part of it. Newer insiders, corporate media types and already existing idiots beginning the take over of official fandom discourse in the early 10s, made what came next what it was. But there may have been some early complaining from these types with zero.. It was just so tiny and removed from the fandom and fans that it was irrelevant and non noteworthy mostly. At least that's how i saw it. (seriously, do a search of the issue before ~2007-2008)

I should have been more clear. I do tend to subconsciously conflate the two into one now i think. (ZS and M story)

MLID estimates PS6 Orion to be between $699 - $999.
So his nonsense about the PS6 being cheaper than the PS5 Pro is just that. It's "technically" cheaper because there's a shitty portable you can buy but the console that people will actually want will be just as expensive as the PS5 Pro.

You just have to not completely fuck up the cast and script.
Sly 4 completely fucked up the script, atmosphere, writing, characters, villains, plot and pacing and that was thirteen years ago, back when there was still SOME talent at Sony. Please god don't make a Sly movie, let him rest, don't rape his corpse like you raped Kratos i beg you.

That's because they outsourced Sly 4 out to Sanzaru who made The Sly Collection, because they approached Sony about wanting to make it while Sucker Punch (who made 1-3) didn't want to. There's probably not anyone who could even make a Sly 5. Sanzaru didn't know what they were doing and don't exist anymore anyway (they got bought by Facebook in 2020 to make Oculus games and then got shut down this year). Sucker Punch, much like Naughty Dog, has said they want to make "serious" games with realistic graphics now and have no interest in making cartoony kids games; and they're mostly different people now anyway. I can't help imagine that just about any dev Sony could tap to make one would similarly either be disinterested or incompetent.
