So what would happen if Sony decided that third-party microtransactions were no longer enough to keep up with PlayStation’s increasingly-frequent losses? Sega had enough noteworthy franchises to live as a third-party, Xbox brute-forced enough buyouts to always be relevant and is pivoting to consolized PCs, and Nintendo would seppuku before they ever considered going third-party (and even if they did, their games would still thrive anywhere). What would PlayStation even do in comparison? Drop dead the moment they can’t astroturf their own modern IPs and refuse to bring back old ones? They live by mooching off everyone else.
Somebaldi said this but Sony only got lucky due to the fuckups of everyone else.
PS1:was the result of Sony having a fallout with Nintendo, thus leading to the PS1 becoming a thing and making Nintendo wish they gave Sony a fair cut instead of wanting a 90% cut. Add them announcing the price tag by basically sabotaging segas conference
PS2:initially was just a video game console with the early jap models unable to play movie discs. Sony realized that they could sell fuckloads more PS2s by turning the PS2 into a DVD player. Was also able to pull ahead because the other consoles took too long to release (GameCube and Xbox) or got fucked in the ass by sony (dreamcast)
PS3: initially a disaster for sony, especially with CELL for devs and the horrific pricing, dogshit 3rd party ports that ran better on a console that used a basic bitch GPU from the mid 2000s alongside a chip that made anti aliasing possible on the X360 and...YLOD. Only for the reballing shitshow to happen that led to the X360 in particular getting fucked via RROD. Resulting in a second chance for sony to shine with a newer, cheaper model and functional 3rd party ports; while still somewhat inferior to ports on the X360, had the benefit of not making the PS3 shit itself and came on a single disc thanks to blue ray as opposed to the 360 and the multiple discs. Oh and free online.
PS4: should i even explain why it succeeded?
PS5: ok this ones an exception.
Anyhow, with PC prices being the way they are, is a jailbroken PS5 worth it? I don't play online much so a PS5 with loads of free games doesn't sound bad tbh.
