@Belvedere I know all that, and I have a Thor myself (good shit, but the Retroid Pocket Duo and newly-announced Anbernic RG DDS (yes, Anbernic pulled an Anbernic and announced a successor to the RG DS Plus mere weeks after its release) may surpass it thanks to the better second screen resolution and built-in stylus).

But the idea of giving my young child a device with chinese shit on the box, engrish in the stock OS, initial setup being a chore, having to deal with emulator settings, playing russian roulette with the build quality, etc. just feels wrong to me. Sure, I know how to do all those things just fine. But I don’t want to push it onto someone as their first gaming experience, especially a child, and I’m not exactly eager to tell a kid to roam the internet and learn how to handle roms themselves with today’s Internet culture. The tech-illiterate-dumbfuck “turn the thing on and play a game” option needs to exist. Unironically, think about the children!

On the other hand, maybe it should be the parent’s responsibility to set up the handheld and curate it to a point where it has games and shouldn’t have to be altered any further, like a custom NES Classic, and the parent can discreetly add more games to it over time? I don’t know.
OG PS Vita is the best handheld emulation machine on the market, is as easy to jailbreak as typing in a web address on the device - yes, seriously that easy, and is restricted to N64/PSX era games. Fallout 1 and 2 run natively with minimal effort and even Zelda can be installed.
Downloading games is as easy as installing an app, which shows up as a bubble, opening said app and scrolling through 3500 games, click X to win download.

Safe for kids, easy to set up, won't break the bank, is actually portable and is just awesome from start to finish.

I see why Sony is hesitant on allowing consumers to jailbreak their PlayStation 5s. It's too little too late since the Black Ops ports have been compromised. Make the justification that it's for game preservation, and I see that, a major disadvantage to that is that it allows many multiplayer games to be compromised.

The reason why Sony is "hesitant" to allow jailbreaking is that it enables piracy.

Be interesting to see how this works without any physical copies of GTA VI, especially with the precedent being set this gen for letting existing owners upgrade for free.

Either way it doesn't matter: Sony could resell the exact same game with zero changes except a PS6 logo and retards would still buy it just to have something to own on their new $2,000 shitbox.
Cynical theory is that Rockstar will make a physical discussion copy of GTA6 PS6/next version of Xbox and PC exclusive to ensure double dipping and call fans bluff.

None of the next gen consoles will ship with a disc drive, not only killing physical games, but also physical media like tv shows and movies.
Head to the charity shops, Facebook market place and buy up as many Blu Rays as you can, even if you just horde them. They'll be worth a fortune inside of a decade, seen as hipster, collectors media.
Avatar 3D will be worth a fair bit.

That is the correct way to look at it. Ultimately parents should curate the content their children play and not just lazily hand them a device without any oversight.

Then how would the parent handle the issue of adding more games over time, or would the console be in permanent stasis until the parent arbitrarily says “btw I added more games, have fun”? That sense of the kid exploring and finding more games would have to be answered by:
>A. Going to the store and finding something to rent/buy (not possible for an emulation device, and renting is dead)
>B. Pointing the kid to a rom site and telling them to go nuts (it’s only a matter of time before they end up on Discord or something)
>C. Just load up the device beforehand (they’ll be overloaded when hundreds of games are thrown at them at once)

I’m not trying to be a smartass, this really is something I’ve been thinking about. One idea I had was loading up a console but making the game list private, then giving NFC cards so they “own” and value a curated selection.

How will that work when neither console ships with a disc drive?
And that's likely the case since Sony has been shutting down its media production plants(which Microsoft also uses) for a decade now. Some people would rather just speculate on hopes and dreams rather than do any reading about the causes of anything.

Wouldn't they need to basically make thier own varriant of discs that could ethier be Blu-Ray based or something that could store more than it using some other company's prodction plant

Who? Rockstar? Microsoft? No? Why open your own media production plant when third party companies have had them for decades. It's just an unnecessary expense and considering Sony has had their music division for ages and of course movies, it makes sense they'd manufacture media themselves.

They shut down their NJ plant ages ago. Their Indiana plant has been transitioning into making car parts for years, shifting most of their North America production to one of their Austria plants, for which they started shifting to production of optics at the end of 2024.

As far as a blu-ray variant... HD-DVD already lost that "war" ages ago, and anyone just licensed blu-ray because again, the expense of R&D for an entirely new technology for something the publishers have been wanting to get away from since the ps3/360 era. Eliminating physical media is cheaper than continuing to use it, and creating a new physical media format would just be more expense all for a market that has proven its not interested in it for a decade at this point. Go to any retail store today that sells games, and compare the physical media section to just 10 years ago. Same goes for blu-rays and DVDs. These sections of aisles now are tiny at a Gamestop, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, etc. Even 10 years ago they were smaller than they had been in the early 2000s.

Definitely the collectible nature of game cartridges going away is something that is missing and that children particularly enjoy because how important tactile feedback is for them. A and B are out of the question and C would only give them choice paralysis and a lack of commitment to finish any game. An idea would be to include singular games of different genre so there is choice and variety but not so there is a lost of focus: one for RPG, racing, tactics, platformer, fighting, puzzle, etc. See what clicks with them: Did they enjoy and beat part 1 of a series? Then they can get 2, etc. There is the benefit of hindsight so you know what are the best series and games to include in the list.

The idea of the cards is great and if you have the technical knowledge to pull it off that'll be a extra for the kids. What I would add to this idea is that instead of a card, it could be a small 3D printed figurine with the NFC chip embedded within it that represents the game it unlocks, like personalized version of Amiibos they can collect as a substitute for the lack of cartridges. If you even want to be extra nerdy about it you can paint the figurines together with your kids as an added shared activity.

What I was getting at was why Microsoft, if they actually wanted to keep discs for the next console, go to other third parties that do still own production plants like Verbatim instead of relying exclusively on Sony for the discs

I mean fair that making completely different formats probably wouldn't work, but you could licence Blu-Ray and base your discs off that, It's what BD-XL and the Blu Ray based M Discs are, and Microsoft already has some degree of alteration with thier version of the format with the digital identifier baked into every Xbox disc since the XBONE that they're only now using for thier "digital licence" scheme

That's effectively any MiSTer device with a console mode UI with an NFC reader and zaparoo. But at the same time...

Just don't put 40,000 games on the thing? Yeah you can get 40,000 games onto a 512GB SD card. But how many of them are actually "good" and anything anyone would want to actually play? NES through PS1 era... just find 5-6 of the best games for each system and be done with it. If they end up with a preference for certain genres, then dump some more from those genres onto it. All of the Atari 2600, colecovision, intellivision crap even if they did play any of that the novelty would likely wear off within 10 minutes and even the 8 bit era is pushing it at this point.

You mean the other physical media production companies that have been ramping down operations for years? And again, why? Physical media means physical distribution, which costs more. Also, as stated most customers aren't interested in it. If they were, then the entirety of the xbox and playstation aisles wouldn't be a singular 4' wide set of short shelves at this point. Midnight releases at gamestop are still a thing as they're desperately trying to be relevant but hardly anyone shows up for those releases because they can pre-load the digital purchase and have it be ready to go at midnight rather than be at a retail store, have to drive back home, install the game, download the 75GB worth that didn't fit on the disc, and then finally be able to play it.

Again, why? Outside of a very vocal minority, most of the consoomers don't care and it's just more cost that Microsoft, Sony, etc. can eliminate to increase their margins. That's why they've been in the process of doing this for almost 20 years. Telling Microsoft to invest another 500 million into physical media production would get you laughed out the door. And the xbox digital license shit? They'll still retain the right to revoke it later on if they want. This physical media panic buying will not last.

edit: I'm going to try and be as clear as possible. There is ZERO benefit for these publishers to continue with physical media, and any complaining or buyers quitting is more than negated by the cost savings. Yes, it fucks the consumer. They don't care and never did.

It's the parent's job to be a fucking parent?!?! GASP! Say it ain't so!!!

Also yes, it's your job to set up him with a good locked-down console with good games on it. Block it from network access if you're that terrified of chink spyware.
