I'm really not trying to be a smartass either, truly. Perhaps I'm confused/lost on the "nuances" of the concern. But could you, like, maybe, talk to your offspring and maybe ask him what games he likes? He can talk, right? He has preferences and stuff, yes? He can give feedback after trying something, to indicate whether he liked it or not, can't he?
How is this even a genuine concern? Does he have zero friends or social contact? Has he never been exposed to any video game ever and therefore has no concept whatsoever what one even is or what games are available?
Oh boy, can't wait for people to fail to learn from Yuzu's mistakes that led it getting killed the moment GTA6 gets close enough to have the release build leak.
Word online says that original switch is also getting there, just that the fuckin' PS5 got it first.... well, if you put it like that, it's more palletable than "Look at this brand new way we got the bing bing wahoo games on Pee Cee again!" and suddenly the emulation/piracy scene suddenly becomes 100 times more insuffrable.
I was hoping for the PS5 to be cheap by this point, as was every console in history, unfortunate that it hasn't panned out that way as a second hand jailbroken PS5PRO+VR headset would have been my VR machine from here on out.

used modded wii or a used switch. consoles by themselves are cheap, allows for multiplayer, and good for families due to the game selection. modding a wii is incredibly easy as you can just get a 64gb SD card, a copy of ModMii, and be up and running with a couple of games in 15-30 mins. wii.hacks.guide is a good resource, although obtaining games will have to be done on your own, but finding websites isn't that hard and copying them over is the same as copying legit backups over via a backup manager, most likely TWBM.
a modded wii has a great selection of games (including emulation and playing GameCube games via Nintendont) and is pretty easy to setup. only real issue with the wii is the lack of HDMI, but you can get past that if you buy an ElectronWarp or a cheap wii to hdmi adapter (the ones from kaico/bitfunx are good, otherwise get an ElectronWarp since the cheapest no-name ones are hit or miss).
a handheld is nice and all, but they're easier to break and you can't really share it with others. switch would be better due to it being a hybrid and the console just being newer, but the games still cost a lot.
as for the other recommendations here, ambernics or AYNs would be a bit more annoying to setup than a wii, and stuff like the PSVITA costs way too much nowadays to be worth it unless you're an autist that really wants to play tearaway or a shit ton of JRPGs.

sony fucked up the PSVR2 beyond belief, apparently they sold off a bunch of patents to meta so i'm not surprised if they piss out of console VR in general and instead just focus on making the optics to sell to companies.

They had the perfect chance to corner that market and be the defacto console VR from here to eternity. Instead they shat out concord and fairgame.
Destiny VR, Destiny 2 VR- remakes of course with 4k gfx, Killzone quadrilogy VR, more GT, even shit out some 1st person old school shooters. Buy Soldier of Fortune or Red Faction devs/IP or make some more. Astrobot VR, Resogun and Wipeout VR, more resident evils, the list goes on.
That's why I hate Sony, they could have done good things for the gaming community, but they choose to follow the social normies who hate gaming.
14.00 will probably get exploited too. And it’s funny how much people are done with sony. I already got people telling me GTA VI will be the last legal PS5 game they buy.
Have you asked them why they're bothering with that since they've already decided to "boycott" the company by buying another of their products before starting their "boycott"?
I didn't see it mentioned here, but there's a port for PCSX2 for jailbroken PS5 called PS5SX2 which makes PS5 run PS2 discs, it even supports USB DVD Drives for people with digital consoles, broken drives, or want to play PS1 games. Proofs from dev's twitter:

But it cannot run PS1 games discs for obvious reasons. But for those who don't get it, PS1 games are on CDs, PS4 & PS5 can't read CDs. The PS3 had 2 separate lasers inside. One for CD’s & another for DVD’s / Blu-rays. Of course, that can possibly be solved by using external storage & USB DVD Drives.
TL;DR - Sony's claim that the reason they didn't have backwards compatibility was because it was an impossible Herculean task? Yeah, it was pure bullshit after all. As proven by the modding community & AI, we have it already in a year. Play truly has no limits, other than the ones Sony put on it, except when Sony chooses to anger its community.

It took Sony's absolute hubris and contempt to the very audience that helped build the PlayStation brand for the entire hacking and emulation community to become activated like Manchurian Candidate's sleeper agents.
Sony was expecting to lose a part of their user based due to the transition to a fully digital PS6, what they did not expect was an open declaration of war from the costumers.

okay I assume you meant “the built-in drive doesn’t read CDs but you can plug in an external CD drive”, in which case yeah, fair enough
