They bought digital because physical stores were closed
Other way round.
I don't agree that after 40 years of physical ownership, the market organically moved to digital despite it not being ownership
It didn't happen overnight, it's been a gradual process going on 20 years. You can literally see this in consumer spending charts: as digital marketplaces became more common, secure and convenient--remember when you had to buy special currency to purchase stuff on the 360 and Wii instead of using a credit card?--more and more people started to use them.
The destruction of physical media in exchange for digital benefits the companies, not the customers.
It benefits both, I'm guessing you're too young to remember having to decide which CDs/cassettes to take on vacation.

Of course it benefits corporations significantly more, but no one was gaslit into believing digital/streaming was good for them, they sacrificed things they didn't really care about to access perceived benefits.

A lot of the fan reaction feels performative to me, like it’s something that’s been coming for years but they’re only getting upset now because for the first time ever (unless you’re from /v/), it’s finally considered cool to hate Sony.
There's probably some element of truth to this (/v/ especially loves hating whatever's fashionable to hate) but this dose of pushback is probably also coming because for the first time, we're actually in a position to do something about all the bullshit beyond simply not buying the defective products or services (i.e. SKG (which scared them into going masks-off draconian mode), the LLM stuff, kicking piracy into high gear, etc.). Combined with technical incompetence, anti-consumer arrogance, and general complacency, Sony (and other devs/vendors too) have put themselves in a very vulnerable position. Their software has more holes than Swiss cheese and they've followed "industry standards" for best practices (i.e. none at all) leading to easily-exploitable infrastructure they now can't fix without breaking everything and starting over, which they can't afford to do.

It's not even just perceived benefits
Not having to swap cassettes or CDs in the car(you can tell when someone has never owned one of those old gigantic CD binders).
Not having a movie collection occupying a 2' wide 6' tall shelf in the living room for shit you MIGHT watch once every 5 years.
Not having to pick which handful of games, music, whatever to take along on a vacation
Not losing a game, album, whatever
Not having one of these fucking things occupying an entire wall in your living room and 2-3' of floorspace from the wall

Not having to move an entertainment center and all of the shit in it because you're moving to a new place, want to replace the carpet, or just paint the wall.
Not having a tape getting eaten by a player gone bad
Not having a tape or record get worn out
Not having a record or disc getting scratched
Not having someone ask to borrow something and never return it

This was all normal shit that the average consumer would absolutely not want to go back to dealing with on a regular basis.

Of course for the companies involved, it's a massive cost savings and that's all they care about.

I have to admit I love my gigantic impractical walls of DVDs, but

doing this once a year for four years of college fucking sucked, which is why I ended up selling most of them and am now having to rebuild my collection.

My biggest regret was selling my fighting game collection because after high school I had no one to play them with any more. Some of that shit is fucking expensive to buy second-hand; even goddamn Ehrgeiz goes for like 90 bucks.

That shit looks like a bitch to move around. I'm glad I wouldn't have to do that anymore.

If you hold your physical media in those binders, I consider you barbaric.

Meanwhile, Xbox's OS with the Xbox One onwards has yet to be penetrated. I'm sure it will eventually happen, but so far, MS has learned from the Xbox 360 to make it difficult.

I do remember, I remember CDs and Casettes. I remember buying a game and putting it and it worked. I Wasn't autistic enough to be swapping games every 5 minutes, a game was played for days and weeks because they were worth playing for that long.
The change didn't happen overnight, it never does, it crept in slowly but the messaging was out and out obvious and aggressive about how physical was shit and digital was better, without much proof other than "you don't have to stand up as much".
Physical was killed, not ignored, not walked away from, killed on purpose. It was chipped away at. Why remove manuals from the physical games? There was no reason other than make Physical less attractive.

Hell, move away from gaming and look at movies. Sony no longer print Blu-rays, it's harder to find a good Blu-ray copy and streaming has become the standard - though TV was always streaming, sort of.
Family guy was saved by DVD sales. That will never happen again as shows are streamed and then killed.

So then we're right back to the giant entertainment center to store all of the shit(that's what is usually in the closed cabinets or...
Not having a movie collection occupying a 2' wide 6' tall shelf in the living room for shit you MIGHT watch once every 5 years.
And if you were actually keeping discs in jewel cases(cassettes wasn't as bad since they weren't actually that much bigger in their cases) in the car... holy shit that's just so much crap sitting around.

Or... you digitize everything, which obviously you can do with physical media. But then you've still got to store it all somewhere. But again, the average consumer doesn't want to deal with that.

It helps that they added dev mode, a fully official (if a bit inconvenient) way to run homebrew and emulators on Xbox One and later. Unless you want to mod/pirate retail games, it has everything you need.

I stated this as an unpopular opinion before, but MS was quite forward thinking with implementing their Xbox OS into being practically impossible to jailbreak or exploit. A disadvantage for that would be if MS's OS fails in any way, you're potentially stuck. Again, I'm sure that somebody savvy and committed would eventually crack it, but currently, I haven't heard anything beyond Xbox's built in dev mode. Why I think this way, one word: CHEATERS.

They also made the sly move of not releasing anything worth playing post-360.

I have literally never seen anyone say this, so while I'm not calling you a liar this message was nowhere near as pervasive as you seem to think.

I do remember people making the standing up argument for why the Wii sucked and motion controls would be a passing fad, which turned out to be true and why most people who owned a Wii only ever played Wii Sports on it.

I remember this, especially on Neogaf. "At least I don't have to get up and swap discs when I want to play a different game".

What surprises me about Sony is that THEY were the prudent console manufacturer while Nintendo was hands-off with allowing sexuality from third party titles. See BMX XXX and Leisure Suit Larry: Magma Cum Lande (did that get a GameCube release?) I guess Nintendo was smart in bolstering their third party lineups by allowing creative freedom.

I appreciate that, but "I don't have to change discs" was one of the 'main advantages' of digital, in the same way a poster a few posts above is saying "At least I don't have to move all of this stuff". It's Adam Orth levels of thinking which can be shot down when stepping back.
I have to move house so I won't buy a sofa, just a folding chair. A bed is right out, I'll live on an inflatable mattress.

I never put the two and two together so thank you for raising this point. Schroedingers technology; the Kinect/Wii is great because you can jump around but also physical is terrible because you have to stand up.

Is there an advantage of running a PS4 emulator on PC (Shad) to play PS4 games, over running the PS5 emulator to play PS4 games? Are there performance boosts?

Gimme clocks if this has already been posted somewhere else. I didn't see it when I scrolled around.

GoW Lolfag "collector box".

The Forbidden West Collector's Edition came with the digital version despite having a custom steelbook as part of it. Shame that retards keep buying this shit.

I really wish there was a way to solve that problem. Most of the dumb shit companies get up to these days (and even just historically) wouldn't be possible if people just stopped fucking buying their products or paying for their services.

"A fool and his money are soon parted" shouldn't actually be the prime mover of an entire economic system.
