While not another fine addition to Sony's humiliation ritual for the PS5, the jailbreak saga has another new finding for the "video game" console.PlayStation's humiliation ritual has finally reached it's peak. The jailbroken PS5s have their own store called Overdrive, which is essentially Sony's store but with all the games, updates, & DLC free. Proof from Twitter:

Sony killed the original GitHub, someone archived on Internet Archive (this is actually important cause it contains a necessary resources list & installation instructions), & that led to another GitHub. I'm posting last release & source code here just in case (except the tar.gz).
Now everyone can play PS5's massive library of games such Astrobot, the Astrobot spin-off, GoY, Vulvarine, &... Uh... You get the point!
Someone jailbroke a PS5 & got Qwen 3.8 27 Billion parameter running on its GPU at 20 tokens per second.
Below is a lot of technobabble:
That's a real 27B AI model running locally on a games console. The same model on the PS5's CPU did about one token a minute. Same box, same model, & the GPU is what makes it usable.
The project is open source. It's called PS5LM, a llama.cpp port for jailbroken PS5s that runs any GGUF model natively, the dev has ported llama.cpp to the GPU, leveraging the PS5's GDDR6 video memory (more than the console & it's makers do) to turn a "gaming console" (which has no games on it) into a functional AI device. A fork called PS5LM Plus runs as a native PS5 title instead of a payload. That gives the model about 12 GB of memory plus the GPU, versus roughly 6 GB & CPU only. It runs a 2-bit Qwen 3.8 27B & serves an OpenAI & Anthropic compatible API, so tools like Claude Code can point at the console. It also has a TV dashboard showing tokens per second, GPU & CPU use, power draw, temperatures & memory split.
Mind you, this isn't a massive leap by any means. For anyone that wants a point of comparison, pretty much as good asset other mid-range GPUs like the 3070:

Also, it's running a low-bit quantized version, so there will be some loss in model capability. But what's interesting is that this project even supports an OpenAI-compatible API, allowing computers and phones to directly call the large model on the PS5.
PS5 Pro might be better as the GPU is much beefier. RAM would be an issue too (16GB), though I do wonder if modders could crank it somehow to say, 32GB. In fact, You can use max 13.7 GB usable memory, & someone even found a way to unlock extra 1.1 GB more than the base PS5.
Meanwhile, after the graphic cards got snatched by cryptocurrency miners, & now it's being taken by AI companies—for both GPUs & memory. DDR4 prices are up 24% in 3 months, AMD just raised GPU memory prices, & 5090s are basically gone.
Just see these key numbers if you don't get it:
- Model: Qwen 3.8 27B, 2-bit quantized
- PS5 GPU: about 20 tokens per second
- PS5 CPU: about 1 token per minute
- Memory available: about 12 GB with GPU, versus about 6 GB CPU only
- DDR4 prices: up 24% in 3 months

PS5 coming to a datacenter near you.
We're returning to form with the PlayStation having more uses as literally anything other than a game console.
Back in 2010 they created something called the "Condor Cluster" capable of roughly 500 trillion calculations per second! They used it for things like radar processing, image analysis, and AI research. It cost around $2 million, a fraction of what a comparable supercomputer would've cost at the time. The Condor Cluster consists of 1,760 Sony PlayStation 3, & is the US Department of Defense's fastest interactive computer. [A]
Edit: I forgot to include that the public unknowingly helped them in the name of "curing cancer" & shit.
