Since this board is so "non-spregy" and "normal" I can't be the only girl here who has been interested in joining a sorority right?

I go to a SEC (ish) school (though the Greek scene here is in no way as hardcore as Alabama, Ole Miss, etc) and I guess I will be rushing again during the spring. I got cut after second round last year, and wasn't asked back for COB, but third time's the charm right?

Any tips?

The whole Greek thing is dumn, imho. I don't see how people put so much focus on it. Granted, I never went to a proper University, but I was in the Marines, something that you can actually be proud of.

i would say do you best to get in. you can make many contacts for the future.

Good for you?

I'm not doing it so I can be "proud". idk, maybe other girls do it. I would like to join because I think it would be enjoyable and a good way of meeting people.

Again, I can't say too much. I never saw the appeal of it and people put so much effort to getting into one. I guess it helps that it has always been easy for me to find people to chill with (because I am amazing), I just don't see why its such a big deal.

It's great to see that you have high self confidence and you're very good at making friends. But I dunno, I wouldn't go to someone asking for advice on joining a sports team and say "sports are stupid".

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like you're trying to criticize me for wanting to do something because you think it's stupid. Even if you're not, I'm not sure how I said I was asking for everyone's opinion on Greek life.

And I'm not talking about just NPHC sororities here, I'd be fine with opinions on joining alternative types of sororities too. But you're not really providing any help on that either.

I'm not being critical of you, I am being critical of the Greek system. I don't understand it, but its up to you if it is worth it to you. I think its fair that in a thread related to a particular subject one can criticize that subject. You say you want to join a Sorority, I say I don't understand why someone would want or need too. You can follow up by telling me why its important to you. That's how discussions work.

I know a few friends who were/are in fraternities and sororities, and they wouldn't go back. I'm not a college guy myself, But from what I know joining the sort of groups has two major advantages:

Any social event there is, depending on the group you're in, you can get into. Shit like parties, or discounts of bars and stuff has always been a major advantage of these particular groups. The other and the main reason why I would join a fraternity, is the job connections you can get. Believe it or not a lot of the people who you can get connections with might happen to be in your sorority thus increasing your thus incrwasing the Chances of getting a job in your field.

I will warn you though, be prepared for what's known as "hell week". This happens to every fraternity and sorority when a new member joins they have to go through some of the most rigorous crap to get in. Another warning is if you're going to de pledge, don't. From what I've heard the consequences are not good when you do so.

Thanks for the replies. I would like to here from someone who was actually in a sorority, NPHC or not.

as a student in the UK I hold the fraeternity/sorority system in utterly confused contempt as it just seems to add an utterly pointless and irritating extra dimension to the noble art of getting shitfaced with your friends and gorging on casual sex, drugs, and sausage rolls

Lucky, I wish we had PPE and tutorials here. As well as cheaper tuition.

I was in a Fraternity. I made some friends who will be friends for life, and now that I'm about ten years out of undergrad, I can say that with confidence. If I were a woman, no fucking way would I be interested in going Greek. That's my $0.02. Now run along and ignore me and do whatever the fuck you were going to do in the first place.

My university didn't have them, and I probably wouldn't have bothered with them if it did. I've never had a hard time making friends and connections, and all the idiotic kowtowing that rushing seems to involve really isn't my style. But hey, do what you're gonna do.

Ok, is there a reason why?

And what kind of fraternity were you in? IFC, local, etc?

My school was small, we had only one sorority house.
Despite what JERKS say about sororities they're actually great for residents. Basically after the silent period a few girls showed up at my job with some balloons and a poster with congrats and such. This is how I found out I got in, I thought it was really cool of them. We had a few parties, all dry since we were a dry campus, we were not the sorority that people stereotype us to be. Sadly it got in the way of the swim team so I had to part ways. (Too many Saturday meets, I could only make like half of the community service, and it wasn't like I could ever be a big sister)
The best part of a sorority, community service. Looks great on a resume after school.

My sorority doesn't have housing really. But I am interested in the philanthropy, as cheesy at it might sound. I haven't really done this much this semester for various reasons.

Housing was great since it was cheaper than dorms, that's about it.
But of your in for the philanthropy, hell yeah. You'll be involved in tons of community service, we always did the penguin plunge (a drive where you get people to pledge money for you to jump in a lake in January). Some sorties do habitat for humanity, can drives and soup kitchens were pretty common for me.

Cool, thanks for the info!

One of the real reasons one should go to college is for the networking and the Greek system does a very good job at formalizing the networking process. You could make contacts that could be valuable in your industry or at least have an in at a company and that's probably more valuable than what your GPA was or what courses you took. I'd say go for it.

My dad was on my case to join a frat before I went to college but Greek life really didn't appeal to me though it might have made networking easier for me. Also I went to a very nerdy technical school where we had some semblance of frat life but I think the Engineering House was bigger than any frat on campus.
