The South Korean government has voted to force Apple and Google to accept alternative payment in the App Store, threatening the companies' exclusive commission.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the bill has to now be signed into law by President Moon Jae-in. As well as blocking Apple and Google from exclusively using their own in-app payment systems, the new law will also ban them from unreasonably delaying or deleting apps.

Your right. Hardly any of them shave down there.

idk bout apple users since you're pretty much locked to all of their bullshit, but android users always had the option to disable payments on their phone to begin with by de-activating everything google related. Once you do that, anytime you open up an app and go to their section to buy "premium" shit, either the prices don't show up, or you automatically get an error message and can't enter the store.

Also alternative stores DO exist, incuding downloading premium apps without having to pay for them. Aptoide is one of them. Otherwise just use Aurora Store as a vanilla alternative or even F-Droid if you're looking for safer apps that don't track your shit.

I'm liking the sound of this. I don't buy stuff from app stores and I'm not one in finance, but having more open shit means more competition.
This doesn't open up alternative app stores. The thing about not delaying or removing apps is more interesting, though will only be enforced for Korean apps I'm sure (which is entirely natural and right).

It's targeted at Apple refusing most apps the ability to take money from users through non-Apple payment routes without Apple getting a cut, i.e. you can't just put in credit card details to pay for something. I assume Kakao has lobbied for this for KakaoTalk/KakaoPay, or more likely some of the MMORPG companies.

I use F-Droid quite a bit, along with QooApp for more weeb shit. Never heard of the other ones.

To play devils advocate as someone who does tech support for a cellular provider, the vast majority of people who have smart phones (both android and iPhones) are complete idiots and pushing a open platform on them will just lead to more things being compromised.

That aside, hopefully this will throw a wrench into apples plan of locking down the Mac more by only restricting downloads to the App Store

I can attest to this. Working for a security company, getting some people to redownload our app was like pulling teeth. I had to spend an hour on the phone trying to walk someone through the process.

Ditto. At the beginning of last year I worked for a company that decided to roll out a security app that would allow people to reset their windows login password themselves rather than hassle IT for it. We sent out multiple emails a month or two in advance thats also came with an attached pdf instruction sheet that also included pictures to show how to install it and how it works. We also told them that they needed to register to the security app by a certain date or else their account would get locked out. Welp, that day shows up and we get bombarded with emails and phone calls about people's accounts getting locked out. By day 3, I had the steps memorized in my head so much for both android and apple users, I could recall them in my sleep. Surprisingly, most of the calls weren't from boomers. They were from young 20-30 year olds that acted like we were taking up their time rather than the other way around. A lot of bitches were snotty, stuck-up, got frustrated WAY too quickly during the step-by-step process, and a few even complained to their managers about us, but the managers (shockingly) told them to eat shit and listen to what IT had to say.
