Pop culture has been mired in so much irony, sarcasm, and 'subverted expectations' for so long, these faggots can't understand when something that runs counter to their values is being sincere. I cant wait for some zoomer to make some brain rot version of Birth of a Nation/Triumph of the Will that it blows the mind of the 'media literacy' redditors.
 
The show creators constantly keep saying "We made this one for the boys" and feel that play it completely straight is the biggest 'subverted expectations" you can do with modern writing.

Or it's just funnier how over the top horrible it is that they need to sacrifice a child to respawn. I've been listening to some of the 40k audiobooks lately, and each and every Primaris marine was abducted as a child and still have vivid memories of their abduction and the surgeries to make them into supersoldiers. This is meant to be super duper serious, Space King flippantly waves this off.

I know GW will retcon anything but how does this square with the protagonist of Space Marine 2 getting upgraded to Primarus after the prologue?

The cynical answer is they had to be able to upgrade the old Astartes into Primarus so the legacy characters could keep up. As for the lore reason, I dunno, I must have not gotten there yet. I listened to Avenging Son, The Great Work, Primogenitor, then I skipped ahead to Genefather because I wanted to see Cawl and Fabius Bile fight... it was disappointing.

Primaris Marines are just how they make upgraded space marines now, lore wise.

Space Marines that are the old, non copyrightable kind can get upgraded by having all the extra shit put into them with surgery.

SM2 protagonist is the 'he's all fucked up and dying, lets just carve him up and put in the fancy bits' type.
