There's a thread on Chibi, a very cringeworthy and infamous speedrunner, that I had made a few months ago, which got me to thinking: Why not a thread on speedrunning as a whole? And especially since another edition of Awesome Games Done Quick just finished up a few days ago, it's time for a full thread.
In some ways, speedrunning can be admirable. I mean, look at the great rewards that it can lead to:
The sheer dedication it takes to be that committed to something as trivial as shaving a few seconds off of a world record that very few people will give a shit about is a good trait, if that dedication is ever put to something that could be of use to the world. But that's just sheer optimism. The speedrunning community is full of :autism: and they only care for vidya. It's not even fun or a hobby at this stage anymore. Constantly trying to improve on the best speed of a game only leads to insanity and rage. Oh, the sheer rage and tears...
And with :autism: comes the sheer cringe and awkwardness that comes with is as well. Witness how people joke about suicide and killing themselves during a speedrun. Gaze in awe at how a girl hijacks someone else's run to powerlevel for pity points. Even during their main events for charity (AGDQ and SGDQ), witness the sheer uncomfort of everyone there.
I just find their reactions and chimpouts at failure hilarious to witness. And personally, I hope you guys do too. And for a first nominee for this thread, here is UltraJMan. You may know him from this glorious video of him getting hit by his mother during a stream.
He's not only known for that, though. He's also known for powerleveling during AGDQ and SGDQ events completely unrelated to the games at hand.
Apparently he's been banned from these events, but that's a rumor and I can't confirm it. What's he up to now?
That receding hairline and scraggly, overgrown goatee... damn. And how's his Paymetons doing anyway?
Oh... ouch... well good luck making this a full-time gig, as you say on your Tumblr account.
