Hotlinking is embedding an image on another website directly from the website it's from.
I'm seeing this perpetually in the Lolcow board. People link directly to Wizardchan, Fluffybooru, the Blue Buddies forum. Stop. Fucking stop. When you hotlink something, it often redirects you to another image. 4chan and Bluebuddies both do this. This is called hotlink protection.
Whenever you hotlink, people other than you often see an image like this:
So fucking stop.
The forum has a BUILT IN attachment system. All you have to do is right click, save as, and then drag it into your post to get it attached directly to the board. This also prevents it from being removed or lost on the website it's from.
The exception is websites SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED to host images, like http://imgur.com
