Anyone else excited for this? It's basically ROMhacking on steroids because it has actual online community features and is purpose-built for custom levels. It features obvious references to stuff like Metroid, Megaman, Castlevania, Zelda, etc. The retro art style paired with level building based around classic platforming really does make it feel like ROMhack: The Game.

I've been playing the NES classic and it surprises me how similar Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest & Legend of Zelda 2: Adventure of Link are. Both really strange platforming RPGs with currency/item collection, shit combat, and really obtuse puzzles. They could have been better games with at least some non-shit dialogue.

Looks really cool. I dig these things. OpenBOR, M.U.G.E.N., RPG Maker...

Even with Sturgeon's law being embodied with all of that, although you can't blame the content creators alone.
There will be trash levels, it's to be expected, but hopefully like Mario Maker there will be filtering by ratings or plays or something to remove as much garbo as possible.

I had been looking for essentially a PC equivalent to Mario Maker for a long time, and other than Mega Man Maker (which is less than optimal) there's not much. The best that exists is something that has been since basically forever: Lunar Magic. The problem is that SMW was never meant to be some kind of level editor for custom content so actually creating levels with Lunar Magic is an absolute fucking nightmare, you'd know if you ever used it. I mean, Lunar Magic is great. It does a terrific job at working with the ROM to achieve as much authorship as you can possibly get within the limitations of the game, but in order to do that, you have to work with an obtuse and ancient SNES game. It doesn't work well because it's essentially tacking on a level editor.

I'm just hoping I finally get my dank level editing and I don't have to journey through hell to do it.

This looks like Exploding Rabbit's Glitch Strikers, formerly known as Super Retro Squad. http://explodingrabbit.com/glitch-strikers-press-kit/ The Megaman character looks almost exactly like the megaman looking guy in glitch strikers.

Maybe the Exploding Rabbit guy stealth cancelled Glitch Strikers and rebranded himself as Digital Dominion? If that is the case, we might not be seeing this for a while.

Legend of Zelda 2 has not aged well at all.

Zelda 2, Simon's Quest, Faxanadu, Legend of Olympys, Y's and other games I don't remember - a ton of side-scrolling action-RPGs were made at the same time. Faxanadu was the only good one and it doesn't hold up.

That one is probably the slowest to start, but the one I liked the most. I've done 80% of Link's Adventure with a friend taking turns & Simon's Quest is the only one I've beaten all by myself. Ended up being the easiest too, once you start getting upgrades(and later mansions are a joke with almost no bosses or hard fights; Link's Adventure palaces shit all over Simon's Quest in difficulty).

Faxandu really rewarded players early on who were willing to grind their ass off in an early part of the game, you could purchase some epic tier magic from a shop that would shit all over half the game difficulty. It also featured much more interesting set design and bosses.

Simon's Quest set the foundation for a entire genre, but the entire game is pretty halfassed in execution.

What have you wrought upon us, Mario Maker?

But seriously, I like games with level editors. Reminds me of when I'd play Excitebike just to dick around in the level editor. Good times.

I mean, maybe cool. But the thing with those old platformers is, they're so dependent on the "physics" (to be generous with the term) and the controls. And those are things that are easy to screw up.

We'll see.
