Sometimes you are positively surprised by a character in fiction where you thought it will be a tired trope/diversity only to find the character to be way deeper and likable than you originally thought it would.

Post such characters.

Mine is Hans Capon from Kingdom Come Deliverance, originally looking like the usual noble asshole, the dude becomes a total bro rather than engage in petty rivalry.

Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series. Bonus points for Alan Rickman.
Rocket Raccoon from the MCU. Also, best character arc in movies.
Modin Solus from the Mass Effect series. Best Arc of the Series.
Miranda Lawson also from the Mass Effect series. Yes call me a Miranda sucker, but she is better than Samarra who is the female equivalent of Jacob.

Disco Elysium has to be my favorite narrative in a video game, and a has quite a few examples of characters that subvert your expectations of them. My favorite has to be Kuno, if you know, you know. Kim was also very well done, having such a stick up his ass for a good chunk of the game only makes breaking that facade so much better.

My point is, play Disco Elysium.

Rock Lee in Naruto, so many ambitions he had and had the energy.

Kishimoto possibly knew that he was outshining Naruto and he proceeded to shit on the character in every chance he got.

God, Naruto is such an awful anime.
Isn’t Lee’s whole point is that he bets the farm and potentially ruins his life over an exhibition match because of childish pride? He’d already proven himself. The issue was that his ambition at that moment was detrimental.

I like Lee, but his whole thing wasn’t that he was untalented. He had talent, it was just something that got overlooked due to circumstance.
