Crime Suspected bitcoin scammers take over Twitter accounts of Bill Gates, Elon Musk - The great twitter youtube comment scam

Suspected bitcoin scammers appeared to launch a wide-ranging attack on major Twitter accounts on Wednesday in an attempt to get people to transfer cryptocurrency, taking over accounts belonging to corporations such as Apple and Uber and famous people including Bill Gates and Elon Musk.

A tweet sent from the account of Gates, the software mogul and the world’s second-wealthiest person, promised to double all payments sent to his bitcoin address for the next 30 minutes.

“Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time,” the tweet said. “You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000.”

The bitcoin address linked in the tweets posted to Gates's and Musk's account was quickly inundated with more than 200 instances of people sending it money, totaling more than $50,000.

People on Twitter called out the Gates tweet, and others like it from other accounts, as obvious scams. Similar tweets appeared on Musk’s account and on an account associated with Cash, an app for transferring money. The tweets were deleted after several minutes.

Twitter spokeswoman Aly Pavela said the company was looking into the issue and would have more to say later.

Some of the accounts have huge followings. Gates has 51.1 million Twitter followers, while tech executive Musk has 36.9 million. Apple’s has 4.5 million.

Cryptocurrency investors and brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss said from their Twitter accounts that they believed all major Twitter accounts in the industry had been compromised and were tweeting about a fake partnership.

If you have access to Twitter account passwords, why wouldn't you use it for something creative? Like having Donald Trump formally declare nuclear war?
I want to fucking see that happen so badly. Put the cherry on the 2020 cake and use Trump's twitter account to threaten nuclear war with Russia, Iran, and China. Have the whole fucking world end within minutes.

With so many high profile people compromised, this seems like a platform level issue more than each of these individual accounts being hacked.
Not going to disagree with you. We don’t know the story as to how the accounts got comped, only that they did. Would personally love to read the public admittance from Twitter if they were backdoored.

....Because if you did that you'd be spending the rest of your life in federal prison when you inevitably got caught

That said, if you want to fuck with trump like that it would be better to tag putins twitter asking him if he is still interested in having russia buy california per their pre election agreement. twitter would go batshit insane on the spot

and yeah, this seems more like an issue with twitter itself being compromised rather than individual accounts being stupid about password protection

Imagine taking control of Kanye's account and not having him tweet 'N'.

With so many accounts compromised, the hackers might actually have full access to Twitter's backend. The postmortem would be very interesting. I'll be looking forward to it.
Look like at least $100k in BTC made from the Elon account alone. Nice graftsmanship!

These guys can’t even hire people to keep their Twitter accounts secure, yet, they’re trusted with so much technological development.

I have a hard time believing that this is a case of stolen passwords. Seems very unlikely they'd have access to several high profile accounts and use it for a lame bitcoin scam.
First I thought it was ye olde teleco SIM switcheroo, but above poster posted Israel PM trying to get shekels.
Most likely bug with twitter that allow you to post to accounts that you do not own?
