EU Swedish right prepares for power as PM accepts election defeat - Shock of the century

The head of Sweden's Moderate Party, Ulf Kristersson, said on Wednesday he would begin the work of forming a new government after Prime Minster Magdalena Andersson conceded her Social Democrats had lost the weekend's general election.

The Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats and Liberals appear set to get 176 seats in the 349-seat parliament to the centre-left's 173 seats, according to the latest figures from the election authority.

A handful of votes remain to be counted, but the result is unlikely to change significantly.

"I will now start the work of forming a new government that can get things done," Kristersson said in a video on his Instagram account.

The election marks a watershed in Swedish politics with the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, a party with roots in the white supremacist fringe, on the threshold of gaining influence over government policy.

The success of the party, which took over from Kristersson's Moderates as the country's second biggest, has raised fears that Sweden's tolerant and inclusive politics are a thing of the past.

However, their mantra that Sweden's ills - particularly gang crime - are a result of decades of overgenerous immigration policies have hit home with many voters.

Kristersson said he would build a government "for all of Sweden and all citizens".

"There is a big frustration in society, a fear of the violence, concern about the economy, the world is very uncertain and the political polarisation has become far too big also in Sweden," he said. "Therefore my message is that I want to unite, not divide."

Though Kristersson's party is smaller, Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Akesson cannot get the broad backing from the right needed to oust the Social Democrats.

Kristersson is likely to try and form a government with the Christian Democrats and rely on support in parliament from the Sweden Democrats and Liberals.

WORRY

Prime Minister Andersson accepted defeat, but warned that many Swedes were worried about the Sweden Democrats' election success.

"I see your concern and I share it", she said.

The Sweden Democrats aim to make Sweden the European Union's toughest on immigration policy including legislation making it possible to deny people seeking asylum based on religious or LGBTQ grounds.

The party wants to slash economic benefits for immigrants and give more powers to police, including zones in troubled areas allowing searches without concrete suspicion of a crime.

The Sweden Democrats look set to win 20.6% of the vote, against 19.1% for the Moderates. The Social Democrats will be at 30.4%.

Commanding only a thin majority, Kristersson faces a number of challenges, not least the fact of his party's junior status.

Forming an administration and agreeing a budget will not be easy as the Liberals and Sweden Democrats refuse to serve together - or separately - in government and differ on many policies.

"Sweden is now going to get an administration that is only one or two parliamentary seats away from a government crisis," Andersson said.

She said the her door was open to Kristersson if he wanted to rethink his alliance with the Sweden Democrats.

In addition, Sweden is in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis and could be heading for recession next year.

Russia's war in Ukraine has destabilised the Baltic region - Sweden's backyard - and uncertainty remains over whether Turkey will finally agree to Stockholm's application for NATO membership.

Measures to address climate change and long term energy policy also need to be thrashed out while holes in the welfare system exposed by the pandemic need to be plugged and a planned surge in defence spending financed.

The result still has to be officially confirmed, probably by the weekend.

So, hold up. This guy, Ulf, in charge of the Moderates, which is apparently smaller than the Sweden Democrats, says he's going to start forming a new government?

Bro, do you even parliament? Even if SD can't get the rest of the right to cooperate with them, he can't do shit without SD's votes. He's stuck with them, and not the other way around.

Christ, the arrogance of this woman. He's riding a tiger to try and keep his party intact and make sure the SD doesn't gain more power and influence, and you make the oh-so-generous offer of him becoming your bottom? Sure, if your goal to see the Moderates broken and destroyed, that's the best way to do it. But that will just make your problems with SD immeasurably worse once their supporters inevitably start swapping over.

The reason why Uffe is becoming prime minster and not Jimme, is that Jimme and SD knows that the other parties in teh colatcion wouldn't want him to be PM. Ulf can be that. SD also doesn't really want to be the guy in charge. they want to use their power as a wreaking tool and get the other parties to do their politics.

You see this all around the world: political parties whining and bickering and blocking any attempt to do anything by their political rivals, because they see themselves as morally superior to the people who elected all of them, so they shut down the entire government so they can prove to everyone that they don't have to work if the people can't vote 'correctly'.

Good luck Sweden, your parliament will be completely nonfunctional until the next election. You're on your own.

Yeah, but even then Akesson's going to be the shot-caller still. There's a reason I said Ulf was going to be riding a tiger in my second part, because its going to en Sverigedemokraterna tiger.

In case anyone is wondering, SD got a record number of votes from first time voters. The reason of course being that the latest student class has experienced record levels of school violence from immigrant groups. This matters because normally first time voters are very, very, solidly left.

Also, fun fact, one immigrant (Egyptian) co-worker of mine was defending SD to another immigrant co-worker of mine. Saying things like "we need to prevent bad people from coming in" and "you speak Swedish and have a job, you're not gonna get deported." Then he started talking to me and saying things like "we need to be able to understand each other, to communicate. Otherwise we cannot become united as a people." Dude's based.

I find it funny that last year, Sweden got a female PM and less then a year later, she is out.
Turly, this shows how Sweden is a man dominated country who doesn't like "strong female politicans"!

Also, Ulf Kristerson is a manlet.
he is only 169 cm, so even shorter then Tom Cruise.

Great that they won.
I'm too cynical to think they'll actually do anything, and with Sweden itself to become a third world country by 2030, it may be too late. If you're getting Leftie students to vote for you, it has to be bad. The rapes of Swedish women from migrants has got to hit them hard too.

I think a big part of the problem isn't only that, but is also the sort of collective shrug and sweeping under the rug of some vicious crimes because they're inconvenient to the narrative. It's bad enough having to deal with all the violence, but to then have people accuse you of being a racist because, say, a friend got raped but that's considered 'the price of doing the right thing' and no effort is made to catch the guy - great way to dry up the milk of human kindness, that.

There's been moves to the right almost solely based on immigration for years now in Europe, with all the progressives wringing their hands about the rise of fascism and the usual demonising of their opponents. I think it's only going to get worse for them, which is good, but also that a lot of things that might not have gotten pushed will do so because they were unwilling to budge on the immigration issue. Turns out it's not a great idea to victim-blame when you need those victim's votes.
