The big fat moon on the site from Majora's Mask got me thinking, it's a universally recognized symbol of impending doom, it needs no words or explanation, it's something everyone born after the 70s recognizes, it's a modern icon born from pop culture, and is probably going to retain that status for decades to come, at least.
Are there any other symbols of impending doom that were used in the past? What did cultures of yesteryear use as a symbol of impending doom or otherwise events to come that can have devastating outcomes?

John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them, now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships, daddy."
Dad said "NO! YOU WILL BE KILL BY DEMONS!"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons.
"This is Joson," the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!"
So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US," said the demons!
"I will shoot at him," said the Cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the demons," he shouted!
The radio said "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a Zombie.

Seeing women in politics.

Having open borders.

The end of a (maya) calendar.

The coming of the taxman (domesday and greater domesday)

Society wide disease

The building of a new temple of Israel

The mark of the beast on man

The unification of male and female in a single person

I'd say the book of Revelation would be the classic example in Western culture. The sounding of the trumpet, the seven seals being unsealed, the four horsemen, natural disasters, fantastical monsters, the rise of an antichrist, and so on. Similarly, the tearing of the Temple curtain, as happened at Jesus' death.

Three branches will become one.

An island will drift away.

A killing bolt will shine in the night but will not kill.

The star will gorge itself on clay.

Idols will speak and move about.

The black flag will fly above the dome.

The belly of the dragon will drip water.

Two voices will call out in a silence that all will hear.

A rock will stand on seven hills.

The ravens will starve.

The bear will leave its cave forever.

The rod and the ring will strike.

I forget who said it, maybe Bob Lazar, maybe Buzz Aldrin, idk, but I once saw an interview where some UFO guy was talking about how the moon is a relay used by the greys to keep our souls here on earth. Never looked at the moon the same after that.
